The At Issue panel is having buyers remorse. Arrogant Carney Liberals rammed through legislation and they agree Carney's authoritarian streak is real Raj "What happened this week is that the Liberals decided to use their majority to shut down debate and pass legislation that is very controversial" "(Steven MacKinnon)...

At Issue last night wasn’t analysis. Posting the full thing. It was a three-person amen corner with a host Barton, Hébert, Coyne, and Raj spent the segment treating Mark Carney’s line as the only grown-up position in the country—and treating Pierre Poilievre as the inconvenience They did not ask why a PM elected on getting a deal walked away on grounds the other side disputes. They did not ask why the crisis is being run by YouTube video instead of Parliament or an unscripted press gallery session. Coyne said he’s “always in favor of recalling Parliament,” then immediately folded it into why Poilievre’s demand is a “safe harbor.” That’s not accountability. That’s covering for the absence of it What they did say: Coyne: “It’s not a trade negotiation because it’s about a lot more than trade and because there’s not a whole lot to negotiate.” Hébert: “I don’t think that on a major issue such as this… I’ve ever seen a Conservative leader [so] isolated.” And: Poilievre, Lewis, and Blanchet “are not very much part of the conversation.” Raj: short-term, “a political win for Mark Carney”—the closest anyone came to a wince, and even that was deferred to job losses in 2027 Then they spent the back half explaining why the opposition shouldn’t be listened to: don’t look unpatriotic, don’t ask for documents you won’t get, some unnamed people in the caucus/base are “blaming Canada,” Conservative premiers are already with the PM. Coyne, again, never named the Conservatives he says are out of step. Just “people.” Nebulous figures. Useful fog rallying for the One Party State Public support for counter-tariffs is high. That does not make a panel’s job to narrate the government as the nation and the Official Opposition as a branding problem. If your segment can’t produce one hard question about Carney’s process—House, media, the deal text—and can produce several about why Poilievre is isolated, you are not covering a trade war. You are protecting a narrative Andrew Coyne 🇺🇦🇮🇱🇬🇪🇲🇩 Althia Raj Rosemary Barton Chris Carter Brodie Fenlon

The CBC At Issue panel will fret about private capital and a short consultation. It will not say the plain thing: the Liberals spent a decade making new oil pipes uninvestable, the laws that did it are mostly still on the books, and Carney is exempting one project by decree Northern Gateway was killed. Energy East died after the rules moved. Bill C-69 piled process on process. Bill C-48, the tanker ban, is still law. Producers paid down debt and spent elsewhere. That was the rational response.September’s changes did not repeal the framework. Some pipelines came off the Impact Assessment Act list. The Building Canada Act lets cabinet tag a scheme as national interest and skip parts of the old review. Everyone else still lives under the prohibitive rules. It is good to be the king On October 1 the panel called this a financing puzzle. Althia Raj said First Nations “didn’t have enough information,” the rush “might actually create more legal problems,” “nobody did come,” and Ottawa is “de-risking the project further and frankly for political reasons.” Andrew Coyne noted it “doesn’t have a private backer. It has a backer that’s doing like 10% of it.” Chantal Hébert asked why anyone would invest “if the public dime is being offered.” All true, and all beside the point they will not make. Private money is missing because the same party burned the industry, left the statutes standing, and is now offering a one-off waiver plus public cash This panel needs to admit it is obsolete. It spent years enforcing a climate veto on pipelines, then switched to process quibbles the moment the same party wanted one. If the standard moves with the leader, the panel is not analysis. It is the leftovers that went bad in the fridge Andrew Coyne 🇺🇦🇮🇱🇬🇪🇲🇩 Raj athia Rosemary Barton
