Ocean temperatures are going to exceed anything we have seen in recent history. Why does this all matter? The reason is the oceans are the battery of weather. And at this point, there is so much excess energy stored up in the oceans, it's about 11 million terawatt-hours. That's 500 years worth of human energy in this ocean. And over the next few months, that energy's going to be released into the atmosphere. 99% confidence that will make the upcoming year the hottest year on record by far that humans have ever experienced. Southern Argentina, Chile, Brazil could see record-shattering heat waves, and this is where things start to get a little nasty, because when that happens, the crops start to fail. Hundreds of millions of people depend on the exports out of Brazil, Brazil is the world's largest ag exporter. And the scariest one of all is if the monsoons fail, which is now a very high probability event in India. 150 million farmers in India, and 1.5 billion people that depend on that food. If you think about the second and third order effects of this, over the next year you could see energy prices spiking, and electricity spiking, and the grid failing in parts of the Southwest. Commodity prices spiking all over the world. And then you would see places like India, the Philippines, Vietnam starting to face some sort of unrest if there isn't enough food supply that's coming into those markets. Sound up for this! Probably the deepest cave I’ve explored in my kayak. This can be found on the island of Wiay in Loch Bracadale, the Isle of Skye. The sea conditions were calm with hardly any swell. I explored deeper than I expected and wonder how many other humans have seen the depths of this sea cave before. I didn’t manage to see the end of it and by the sound, it went much further than I reached. I doubt if the conditions will often allow me to explore the depths again. It’s wonderful that this cave is in my kayaking back yard, so to speak.

Will we be a witness to El Niño history? It’s very possible! Every new model run exceeds our expectation for the “potential” strength of this upcoming El Niño event. The vast majority of models say a “Super” El Niño is coming. The caveat is that this is just a forecast, it’s early and it may fall short. Regardless though, while curbing our Atlantic Hurricane season, it can have a devastating impact to biodiversity like the Galápagos Islands. The 1982 event wiped out 97% of their penguin 🐧 population! Here’s a look at how El Niño evolves, the warning signs we are already seeing, and how it cripples the islands. (Remember the animation contained inside an idealized visual, it’s not exact) One last note: I’m not using the RONI here because I am simply making an apples to apples comparison of SST anom in the 3.4 region. When discussing the weather/ climate impact of an El Niño event I do agree that the RONI is the better metric. But this video focuses on the Biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands in which absolutes (not relative) matters more. #ElNino #florida
