The Vancouver Police Training Academy in the Woodward’s building was officially opened today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with more than 275 guests and community members attending. “This state-of-the-art Academy represents a new chapter in the history of the VPD and, crucially, in how recruits are trained to become officers who will serve the unique and dynamic policing needs of Vancouver,” said Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Chief Steve Rai. “For the first time since 1978, when the Department last had its own training program, we will be able to fully develop the next generation of police officers in Vancouver -- from the day they join our organization to when they graduate and begin their careers with the VPD.” Forty “Class One” recruits began their studies at the facility in the Woodward’s building at 351 Abbott Street in the Downtown Eastside earlier this week. The students will complete their training and start work in the city on June 25, 2027. Another 40 recruits (Class Two) begin their studies January 18, 2027. “The opening of the Vancouver Police Training Academy is a significant milestone for public safety in Vancouver,” said Terry Yung, Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services. “As a graduate and former trustee of the Justice Institute of B.C., training recruits within the city will give them valuable exposure to the operational environment, diverse communities, and public safety challenges they will encounter throughout their careers. This academy will help prepare the next generation of officers and strengthen public safety for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.” Initially announced in February 2026, the 30,000-square-foot, 3-floor Training Academy received provincial approval in March. They will teach a provincially approved specialized VPD curriculum. This summer, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) will open the Integrated Stabilization Centre (ISC), a secure, space where officers can bring people who are at immediate risk due to severe intoxication, substance use or a mental health crisis. With support from Recovery Alberta medical professionals, the ISC will offer 24/7 medical support and connections to voluntary recovery, health care, community and cultural supports. “The Edmonton Police Service is taking decisive action through the ISC to address addiction, overdose and social disorder with a coordinated approach to public safety,” says Deputy Chief Derek McIntyre. The ISC is designed to help divert people from the justice system where possible, reduce pressure on emergency services and provide care with dignity. The ISC is one more step toward a safer, more supportive response for people in crisis.

[1/2] The "leech therapy" promoted on social media and in alternative medicine clinics is a dangerous pseudoscience that bears no resemblance to the legitimate, highly specialized medical use of leeches in micro-surgery. One is a last-resort surgical tool, applied under the strictest safety protocols to manage its inherent dangers. The other is an unproven, unregulated ritual based on archaic beliefs, performed without any regard for patient safety. This is the strongest possible warning to the public: Never seek leech therapy for cancer or any other systemic disease. Public Safety Training Notification: June 3–7. During the week of June 3 through June 7, multiple Boulder County public safety agencies will be participating in a planned training exercise focused on responding to an active threat incident. This joint training involves law enforcement, fire, EMS, and dispatch personnel working together to practice integrated response protocols through realistic, scenario-based exercises. The training will take place in and around Nevin Platt Middle School, located at 6096 Baseline Road. Community members can expect to see a visible presence of first responders in the area, including police officers, fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles. You may also see officers carrying training weapons and ambulances driving around the building as part of the exercise. The area of 55th Street and Baseline Road will have increased activity throughout the week. This is a planned exercise and not a real emergency. Please do not call 911 to report activity related to this training. However, if you see something in the area that you believe is unrelated to the exercise and poses a threat or emergency, please call 911 as you normally would. We encourage residents to share this information with friends and neighbors, especially those who live near the training site, to ensure everyone is aware and not caught off guard by the increased presence of emergency personnel. During the week of June 3 through June 7, multiple Boulder County public safety agencies will be participating in a planned training exercise focused on responding to an active threat incident. This joint training involves law enforcement, fire, EMS, and dispatch personnel working together to practice integrated response protocols through realistic, scenario-based exercises. The training will take place in and around Nevin Platt Middle School, located at 6096 Baseline Road. Community members can expect to see a visible presence of first responders in the area, including police officers, fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles. You may also see officers carrying training weapons and ambulances driving around the building as part of the exercise. The area of 55th Street and Baseline Road will have increased activity throughout the week. This is a planned exercise and not a real emergency. Please do not call 911 to report activity related to this training. However, if you see something in the area that you believe is unrelated to the exercise and poses a threat or emergency, please call 911 as you normally would. We encourage residents to share this information with friends and neighbors, especially those who live near the training site, to ensure everyone is aware and not caught off guard by the increased presence of emergency personnel. But staff said their greatest need was for their hospital, and its staff, patients and families there, to be protected from strikes and hostilities. Three months into this conflict, it is inconceivable that this most essential need—the protection of health care—is not assured. No hospitals are fully functioning in Northern Gaza, where another WHO mission was cancelled today due to dangers and lack of necessary permissions. Elsewhere in Gaza, a mere handful of health facilities operate. At Al-Aqsa, WHO staff saw sickening scenes of people of all ages being treated on blood-streaked floors and in chaotic corridors. An unidentified child laid dead, partially covered by a sheet, on a bed. Other injured were prostrate on the floor, being stepped over by the health staff and families. A man’s harrowing groans, either from pain or anguish, cut through the emergency ward’s commotion. The bloodbath in Gaza must end. Al-Aqsa is extremely short-staffed. Partners at Medical Aid for Palestinians and IRC - International Rescue Committee announced today that due to increasing military activity around Al-Aqsa Hospital they have been forced to withdraw their staff working at the hospital and cease activities. During today’s mission, we were informed that evacuation orders and lack of safety had forced most health staff to leave. Tonight’s reports indicate that only 5 doctors remain. Hospital management said health workers had no food. The WHO team delivered medical supplies to support 4500 patients needing dialysis for 3 months and 500 patients requiring trauma care. WHO is planning to facilitate the much-needed deployment of an emergency medical team to support the overstretched doctors and nurses of Al-Aqsa. This will only be possible in a secure environment. In recent weeks, the lowest number of daily casualties received at the hospital was 14 fatalities and 48 people suffering trauma. But in past days this has increased markedly, with over 120 trauma cases and dozens of dead arriving per day due to increased shelling, gunshot wounds, crush injuries from collapsed buildings, and other war-related trauma.
