Indian born elected representative Parwinder Kaur appears to claim that Indian people are Indigenous to Australia: “Our genes are integrated into the very first peoples of this nation.” A trained geneticist, she points to supposed ancient migration flows from India some 4000 years ago: “Some Aboriginal Australians carry 11% ancient Indian DNA.” By implication she appears to be saying that Indian Australians are more Australian than European Australians, and therefore have more of a right to live in Australia and determine the migration policy settings of Australia. I don’t think she realises how much damage she is doing to the social fabric of this country by making claims like this. This is just a genuinely catastrophic speech for inter communal harmony. She only moved to Australia in 2007 as an international student but she is basically claiming to be more Australian than people with ten generations of history dating back to the First Fleet.
