Was AirBnB expensive? Was Amazon? Was Apple? Was Uber? This is an excuse to justify high valuations as a tool for “access”. But the reality is finding great companies early is not expensive, it just takes work.

They sound "expensive" because they are comparing it with other companies (spoiler alert, these are not "fungible assets") They look "cheap" if you the expected return/risk ratio calculation I guess that's one of the differences between good VCs and great ones
