From a rather geeky perspective, the dog will be adding weight, possibly in the region of 20kg. So not just a companion on the ride but a training aid as well!

I followed a guy up Ventoux once who was on a mountain bike and had his dog in his backpack. I still remember the dog looking at me with sympathy as I struggled up behind them.
