If someone finds out that tariffs have been imposed on certain products and they still run out to buy them just to complain that prices have increased, they may be complete morons. The best way anyone can avoid tariffs is by avoiding those products. It’s pretty simple actually.

Trump tried this in his first term by leading with no tariffs. NONE of the US trading partners followed him. He learned his lesson. This time he is matching current tariffs of US trading partners to encourage them to drop or lower their trade barriers. The US is the world's largest consumer economy, we import more than we export. This is a YUGE advantage in trade negotiations. Trump is finally using it.

Let's separate the market from the policy. The stock markets correct about every 18 months, as much as 10 to 20%. We're right in the middle of that right now. It's actually healthy. Tariffs in this situation, are not long-term yet. What Trump is trying to do is to reset the tariff schedules that were set in place after the second World War in every single country, not just Canada, not just Mexico, but Germany and England and France and Switzerland and India. So, it's very simple. Let's say we make sugar, as we do, and India makes sugar. And they put 110% tariff on our sugar going to India. Why don't we just reciprocate?

I think the whole deal with Canada is different than Mexico and Europe. The oil deal was 25% and then through a lot of work that Danielle Smith did by visiting Trump in Mar-a-Lago, it got down to a 10% tariff. There's no alternative to buy and the Canadian oil is $13 a barrel cheaper than any other and makes up 70% of the imports. Maybe they pass on this tariff because it's pragmatic. We're in early days of the negotiation one of the big problems is we don't have any leadership in Canada. The election is coming in six weeks. I wish Trump would wait until then.
