Her premiership had been consumed almost entirely by Brexit: the negotiations, the backbench rebellions, the DUP stand-off, the Commons defeats, and the impossible task of trying to unite a Conservative Party that was tearing itself apart over Europe. Her deal was rejected again and again, MPs could not agree on a way forward, and the country remained stuck in the political chaos that followed the 2016 vote. Her resignation speech ended with visible emotion, as she said it had been “the honour of my life” to serve as Prime Minister and spoke of “the country I love”.
