🚨 4 councils signed 83 contracts worth £13 MILLION for taxis last week. Every week I go through newly awarded public-sector contracts, and one thing keeps appearing: council taxi contracts. So last week I decided to add them up. 4 councils. 83 contracts. £13 million. And I’m not singling these councils out. This is a nationwide problem. Councils across the country are now spending around £2 BILLION a year transporting SEND children to school. To be absolutely clear: SEND children who need help getting to school should get it. My issue is with the councils. The law requires them to provide suitable transport. It does not require councils to default to taxis. Yet councils keep on spending money on taxis. The result? The latest figures show transporting a SEND pupil by taxi or private hire costs an average £10,700 a year… …compared with around £1,700 for mainstream council-funded school transport. School buses. Shared transport. Working with schools and parents. There are plenty of alternatives. Instead, councils keep signing off millions in taxi contracts, the bill keeps growing… …and taxpayers are expected to keep picking up the tab.
