The blocked jet stream pattern with a ridge in northwest Europe is causing the September heatwave. Meanwhile the trough in the eastern Mediterranean is responsible for severe flooding from storm Daniel. The jet stream pattern is stuck for the next few days.

A strong Pacific Jet will blast mild air across the nation over the next week. Temps will once again jump to 30°+F above normal - a “blowtorch” pattern through next weekend. But we are in a very changeable/ transient pattern, with both a strong Pacific jet and also strong high-latitude blocking. The combo of these two players means, strong shifts - a week to week see-saw pattern. Not just changeable, but volatile, herky-jerky weather whiplash. In about 8-10 days cold should return to the Eastern US. The real question is: can it lock in? Or will the pattern stay transient? Probably transient given the active Pacific jet, but we’ll see.

Even some nice relief in the deep south! Nope, sorry, not you Florida. Meanwhile in NW Canada a big heat dome will hover, with temps 30F + above normal and highs in the 90s near the Tundra.

After a very long, and quite active Summer, that is all about to change, with a much quieter pattern coming in through this week and next week (perhaps longer). The large upper ridge that has been stuck over the Southern U.S. is likely to retreat back West again, but also broaden out, leading to much more quiescent flow across much of the CONUS. Some isolated severe weather may occur late this week, but probabilities for organized severe weather will remain on the lower-end for the next 7-10 (or more) days.
