The Boeing 757 is often praised for its impressive performance—powerful engines, a relatively lightweight structure, excellent climb rates, and highly efficient aerodynamics. But from an airline economics perspective, the story is more complicated. The 757 is essentially a narrow-body revenue generator with wide-body operating expenses: wide-body wings, engines, landing... gear, tail, gate requirements, and ground equipment. Boeing tried for years to market a next-generation 757, but airlines showed little interest—because no amount of incremental improvement could fundamentally fix the economics. As a result, airlines found themselves operating an aircraft that was operationally brilliant but economically challenging on many routes. Without a clean-sheet redesign, it was difficult to significantly improve its cost efficiency compared to newer, more optimized narrow-body aircraft. This is an Erickson Aero Tanker MD-87 flying with the landing gear down while fighting a wildfire. It may look unusual, but there is a reason for it. The extended landing gear creates significant drag, meaning the pilots need to maintain a higher power setting. That is important because the MD-87's engines can have a relatively long spool-up time when operating at low thrust fighting wildfires. If more power is suddenly needed, waiting for the engines to accelerate can cost valuable seconds. By keeping the engines at a higher power setting while using the landing gear to create additional drag, the aircraft remains closer to its maximum available thrust. This can significantly reduce the time needed to reach full power. A well-known technique when rapid power changes matter. The MD-11 has always had a critical design flaw. It was manageable until someone screwed up. To improve fuel efficiency and range, its horizontal stabilizer was made smaller than those of earlier DC-10 variants. While the design delivered performance benefits, it also reduced the aircraft's natural pitch stability, particularly at slower speeds during approach and landing. To help compensate, the MD-11 relied heavily on computerized stability augmentation systems. These characteristics became evident in several high-profile accidents. American Airlines Flight 1665 was in the air for about 10 minutes after taking off from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas for Charlotte, North Carolina. 153 passengers were on board, according to CBS News. The plane quickly turned around after smoke started coming from one of the engines. "The aircraft taxied to the gate under its own power and customers deplaned normally," American Airlines said in a statement. Some more insight to the callsign SAM47, it refers to the 47th POTUS. Anywhere the POTUS flys, there is at least one backup jet that carries the callsign SAM (Special Air Mission) and then the whatever number the President is shadowing them. For Biden, it was SAM46, for Trump it was SAM45, and for Obama it was SAM44, etc. The POTUS will travel onboard the C-32A (Boeing 757) as well as the VC-25 (Boeing 747). I wanted to share some video of the C-32A picking up Obama in Chicago before the inauguration for a NatGeo special on AF1. It gives you some unique insight into this USAF squadron that is tasked with flying not only the POTUS, but various heads of state and politicians. You’ll see in the video the communications station on the C-32A which is rare to see. This aircraft is capable of a variety of communication abilities from phone calls to connecting the POTUS to the National Command Authority and launching nuclear weapons. There are other aircraft that are involved during POTUS travel and they do a pretty good job of hiding. 😎

28 years ago today - A forgotten near miss in the US June 28 1998: United Airlines Flight 863, a B-747, has an incident in California (US). All 307 aboard unhurt. After take-off, jet had problems on #3 engine. and nearly collided with San Bruno Mt. before dumping fuel and landing safely. Incident led to revision of pilot training. The aircraft lost so much altitude in the accident that it went below ATC radar for about 15 seconds. Some sources state the aircraft missed the ground for as little as 100 ft and people on the ground called emergency services to report an airplane was about to crash.
