I think the reason this was retconned was because the roar needing a bone on the outside of it's body. Having it be an amplifier would've been cool

I wish that Gobber had the boneknapper instead of Grump, I'm not even gonna lie

Part of me wonders what their roar is used for in the Bonenappers life since they already have fire breath to defend themselves.
