Bursting out with its off-kilter bassline on stage in 1993, The Breeders delivered “Cannonball” with a raw, indie edge, a track from Last Splash from 1993 that became their defining hit.

Recorded in 1993, “Cannonball” was released as the lead single from Last Splash and became The Breeders’ breakthrough hit. The song peaked at number 40 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped the US Modern Rock Tracks chart, driven by its instantly recognisable bass intro and Kim Deal’s loose, playful delivery. Live performances around this era, including MTV 120 Minutes, captured the band at their raw, offbeat peak, helping cement “Cannonball” as one of the defining alternative anthems of the 1990s.

A distorted vocal, an instantly recognisable bassline and sudden bursts of guitar noise turned “Cannonball” into The Breeders’ breakthrough hit. Kim Deal even sang through a harmonica microphone to create the strange vocal sound heard on the recording. The track came from their 1993 second album Last Splash, produced by Deal and Mark Freegard, and its success helped push the album to platinum status in the US. Its memorable video was co-directed by Kim Gordon and Spike Jonze. At Pinkpop on 23 May 1994, “Cannonball” captured The Breeders at the height of their breakthrough, just months before they joined that summer’s Lollapalooza tour.

Captured at Pinkpop in 1994, Cannonball documents The Breeders at the height of their mainstream breakthrough. Released in 1993, the song appeared on Last Splash, the band’s second album, and became their biggest hit, reaching the UK Top 40 and dominating alternative radio worldwide. Written by Kim Deal and built around a distinctive bass intro and stop start dynamics, Cannonball helped push Last Splash to multi platinum success. Festival performances like this showed the band translating their off kilter studio sound into a powerful live setting during the peak of their 90s run.
