I grew up with the C64 (early 80s) as so many of you here. My very first game ever, the one that my brother and I played to death, was Falcon Patrol (1983) designed by Steve Lee. If there is one sound I will remember until my final days, it will be the refueling sound of the jet. What was your first computer and the very first game you played on it? (Not a game that you played at your friend's place or at the arcades - but the first game on your very own first computer)

Westwood was such an amazing game studio. One of their timeless classics is Eye of the Beholder 2, which was released in 1991. The intro alone gave me nerd chills - anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons would remember Khelben Blackstaff, and if he considers you his friend, what an honour! The game itself is your typical dungeon crawler. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way but appreciating it for what it was and is, a great game of its genre. Excellent graphics (I am such a sucker for that 90s pixel style), good sound effects and music, and an easy to use interface, making the real-time fights fast paced but manageable. Among the greats of Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore were probably a tier below, but I always loved coming back to them. To me, this game is emblematic of the early 90s, and for that I love it.

Jan Valta and Adam Sporka created incredible music for KCD2 video game, and there's one detail in particular I've been wanting to share for a year now, given how amazing the music is in narrative sound design. I recognized the Hussite song in certain locations, specifically those resisting Sigismund's rule: Semine, Suchdol, and Raborsch, each with a different instrument but the same theme. When I first played KCD2 and heard this music in Semine, I immediately recognized it, being a fan of Czech history. I already suspected that the lord of Semine was plotting against Lord Otto von Bergow. This theme behind the music, the Hussite song, echoes the events 20 years later with the Hussite Wars, a religious war and crusade waged in Bohemia by King Sigismund of Luxembourg. My opinion is that the difference in instruments in these pieces of music with the same theme is to distinguish the settings. Semine is in the Bohemian paradise with more choral music, Raborsch is an isolated estate with agriculture with solo guitar music, and finally Suchdol is an impressive fortress with a military aspect to the music. I just did the montage with the musics of these locations :

I theorize that this sound track here is the soundtrack that will play when Homelander is dying in The Boys Season 5 Episode 8, The solemn tone in the song just hits you like a train, this is Homelander dying an agonizing death, he’s scared and he knows he is not a god he’s just a human who got lucky with a serum that gave him powers and now he has no powers. Butcher is definitely delivering that final blow given by how the sound track ends.

What graphic and music artists managed to create with the limited resources available back in the day is nothing short of impressive, and it still boggles my mind. Just look at the limited color palette and what they created with it, the simple but incredibly well-executed animations, and listen to the music. It's the intro to Powermonger (Bullfrog, 1990). The whole game fit on one (!) disk, 880 KB. That included the epic intro, the 3D landscapes, and all gane mechanics, graphics and sound). Imagine seeing that intro for the first time and how hyped you would have been to play the game (which was epic, by the way). The golden era.

When composing the music for Streets Of Rage, I wasn't deeply familiar with the Roland TR-808 or its successors, only their names. Yet, I recognized their iconic sounds from many Western hits. The SOR music was heavily influenced by these. I emulated these drum sounds using the YM2608/2612 FM sound chip, which is distinct from the analog oscillators/PCM in the drum machines. Listen to this video of the PC-8801FA playing "Stealthy Steps" from SOR. The solo 808-ish drum sound is featured at the beginning. It's remarkably close to what I recall from my composing days. #808day
