The Cable Guy isn't a comedy, it's a horror movie about what happens when a lonely man gets your address. Jim Carrey played the final boss of parasocial relationships in 1996. We just didn't know it yet. 🎬📺 The Cable Guy ❤️🔥

The Cable Guy (1996) was sold as peak Jim Carrey goofball comedy, then blindsided audiences with something bleak and uncomfortable. The backlash wasn’t about quality so much as expectations.

All this for a guy he met a few weeks ago btw. Ben Stiller's THE CABLE GUY (1996), starring Jim Carrey, Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann and Jack Black, was released on this day 30 years ago.

THE CABLE GUY (1996) was a tough sell. Jim Carrey’s audience expected another broad comedy, while the movie was a much darker satire. The disconnect between what people expected and what they got hurt it more than the film itself.

The Cable Guy (1996) shocked audiences expecting the same manic comedy Jim Carrey. Instead he played a deeply unsettling loner in a pitch black satire. Critics hated the tonal shift at the time, but that exact edge is why the film has aged so well.

The Cable Guy (1996) took a surprising turn. Jim Carrey embraced a darker, more uncomfortable side, just as audiences were anticipating another Ace Ventura. This unexpected shift led to its initial rejection, but it’s now considered a much stronger film.

The Cable Guy (1996) took a real swing. Jim Carrey leaned into something meaner and more uncomfortable right when everyone expected Ace Ventura again. That mismatch is why it got rejected, and also why it plays so much better now.
