His argument ignores the chronological truth that the Church came before the bible, compiled the bible, and interpreted bible for 1500 years before Luther. Sacred tradition and sacraments matter, even at the mega church.

Thus the wordplay behind Matthew 16:18 is essentially, “You are Rock, and upon this rock I will build my Church.” The Church explicitly understands Peter as the rock because of the faith in Christ that he has just confessed. Calling a man “rock” does not compete with God or Christ being the ultimate Rock. Scripture itself uses rock imagery of Abraham: “Look to the rock from which you were hewn… Abraham your father” (Isa 51:1–2). Benedict XVI specifically connected this Abrahamic background with Peter: as Abraham stands at the beginning of the covenant people through faith, Peter, through his divinely revealed confession of Christ, receives a foundational mission in the Church. So the entire passage forms a coherent picture: Simon confesses Christ through revelation from the Father → Christ renames him Rock → Christ builds his Church upon this rock → Christ gives Peter the royal keys → Christ gives him authority to bind and loose. Elsewhere Christ also commands Peter to strengthen his brethren (Lk 22:32) and entrusts his sheep to him (Jn 21:15–17). Therefore the Catholic position is not “Peter instead of Christ.” Christ is the ultimate foundation and source of all authority; Peter is the rock because Christ makes him so. Nor does Catholic teaching deny the importance of Peter's confession—the Catechism specifically teaches that because of the faith Peter confessed, he became the “unshakable rock of the Church.” (CCC 552–553).

You won’t find a single dogma of the Catholic Church that we can’t quote you bible verses to support, the Bible that we published. The devil sent Luther to divide us so that Islam could survive. 1492.

Reading comprehension issues are a huge part of why sola scriptura cannot be a thing. Everyone with a different reading ability has their own interpretation, and every interpretation that is different from The Church’s is its own religion. It is not Christianity.

Peter's name was Simon. Jesus imposed upon him the name Petros, the rock, in Greek. Jesus named him the rock and then said, you are the rock, and on this rock I'll build my church... where did I lose you?

I taught myself Greek and am working on Hebrew to avoid so many layers of Biblical translations and interpretation. This lead me to Greek Orthodox, its the closest to original apostolic tradition and practice.

One thing he conveniently left out…Martin Luther changed the bible and the way it was translated and Protestants have continued in the time honored tradition ever since. In fact, to even rationalize breaking from the Catholic Church, Luther created an idea that was never previously thought by any “early Christians” that the Bible is simply more important than the same oral tradition that led to it. There’s a reason Protestants don’t teach Christian history…

I used to believe the confession was “the rock” until I looked into the location where this was taking place. Caesarea Philippi, in front a a limestone cave known as the gates of hell. This is where the transfiguration took place. Hence “the gates of hell will not overcome it”

I was born and raised in the Lutheran church. So I don’t speak from any bias here toward Catholics nor Orthodox when I say; The older I’ve got the more I’ve realised that Protestantism in all its forms was a mistake and bad. You don’t see the acceptance of homosexuality marriage and all sorts of other abomination in the Orthodox nor the Catholic Church. After spending a lot of time looking into things I’ve concluded that both the Orthodox and the Catholics have a traditional form of chrisianity. However the Orthodox have kept it unchanged whereas the Catholic Church did evolve. This evolution was in much the ultimate source of the split. Where “suddenly” the bishop of Rome declared himself to be not just the first among equals but the head of the church. While both Catholics and Orthodox follow a traditional form of Christianity, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Orthodox are the original church. Even if catholics make a lot of noise about it not being so. The whole concept of the infallibility of the pope is backwards. Even if said infallible judgement has been used only twice. Furthermore, I see that the mere endless stream of corruption and evil that has struck the highly centralised Catholic church over the many centuries speaks for itself. A highly centralised church is like an open goal for subversion while a system based on consensus among many church “elders”, like the Orthodox Church, is strong and resilient. That alone, in my mind, speaks volumes. And i have a hard time believing that Jesus wanted his church to be anything but resilient. Which is also why I believ that more people will end up concerting to Orthodoxy and weve already seen this trend in many countries. I might become one if them.
