The Cavaliers' pick and roll offense has been dominant recently. A concept I love is starting in spread ball screen alignments but immediately cutting the corner into dunker spacing. Feels like they are able to get the results of both spread and dunker spacing all at once.

The Murray/Jokic duo is lethal, as we all know. Those two in action together w a flat spacing look -- both wings empty, corners filled, one in the dunker spot -- is nearly impossible to deal with. I have them at 18 points on 11 possessions (1.64 PPP) in G1 vs MIN. Nonsense.

One of the biggest keys to a great offense is being able to capitalize on advantages. Some teams have great dodging, but can’t convert once they draw a slide, or have great transition opportunities but aren’t cashing in. Usually, this is because players have poor spacing, allowing one defender to guard two offensive players or players make slow decisions allowing the defense to recover back to neutral by the time they move the ball. This “Sub Game” constraint is one of the best and most fun ways to train your team to use “Scanning” to have great spacing and zero-second decisions to capitalize on advantages. You and your players will LOVE this small-sided game!

Iman Shumpert on the Giannis and Bam fit: “The strengths become defensively, they can switch things. They both are intense of going for blocks, the other guy off the ball is allowed to roam free…. The only thing I can think of as a weakness would just be the 3 point shooting. On offense they both kind of Co exist in the same spots. They like the dunker… They both need a little time with their handle and it creates bad angles for people. I would like to see them on the breakaway more if it’s going to be exciting. The only thing is in the half court if you don’t have shooting, you’ll be in trouble at times”

There’s no basketball reason why we shouldn’t be able to be a little bit better there. I think they kind of both play in the same rhythm, but I feel like it kind of feels like it’s maybe ‘your turn-my turn’ a bit rather than having like a two-man game such as Denver has with Murray and Jokic, but they both have the ability to create for each other, which I think came and went at times. You are going to love the Backpedal Pick concept. Instead of running towards the ball carrier to set your pick, do the opposite, backpedal and give ground, as the dodger approaches the pick. Backpedaling and keeping a cushion of space makes it much harder for the on-ball defender and the picker’s man to play their coverage. The Backpedal technique basically enables you to set a legal moving pick, meaning it’s a moving target, that the defense has trouble navigating. Then at the last moment, you can set your feet and can be stationary. If the on-ball defender wants to get under the pick, they can’t find an angle to get under. Also, the picker’s man struggles because they can’t easily get “outside the pick” position as the picker keeps retreating and giving ground. It’s almost like a legal moving seal! The backpedal pick technique is deadly around the goal line, making it impossible to get under and much harder for the picker’s guy to switch or jump it! One of the biggest keys to 2-man game is great pick setting and universally, kids don’t know how to set and adjust picks. I think you’ll find this pick technique will make a difference in your offense!
