The CDC is no longer trustworthy. We know what will happen as a result of the potential change to the hepatitis B vaccine recommendation. How? Because that was the recommendation prior to 1991. That approach didn’t bring rates down enough, which led to the birth-dose recommendation in 1991. Prior to 1991, ~18K newborns/year were infected with hep B. Nowadays, it’s <20. So we’re moving backward, not forward.

The first vaccine against hepatitis B was approved by the FDA in November of 1981. When the vaccine became available in 1982 ACIP recommended the vaccine for individuals who were at risk for contracting hepatitis B due to their lifestyles or their employment. The targeted population included IV drug users, homosexual males, individuals with multiple sex partners, newborn infants of hepatitis B positive mothers and health care workers and patients exposed to blood and blood products. In 1991, ACIP recommended that all infants be injected with the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine at birth before being discharged from the hospital newborn nursery.
