The Commission held “technical talks” with the #Taliban in Brussels today. What a shit show. The Taliban are not seeking technical discussions with the #EU, they are seeking legitimacy. And they won’t stop here. My initial thoughts on this meeting.

Legitimacy is not something that can simply be handed out in a meeting room. It comes from political realities. After two decades of war, if EU officials are now holding talks with the Taliban, that says more about failure of Western policy than it does about Taliban ambitions.

The EU now finds itself contradicting its own principles. After spending two decades fighting the Taliban, it is now placing its hopes in them to contain and combat other terrorist groups such as ISIS-K or TTP , despite their shared ideological roots and long history of coexistence within the same militant ecosystem. How can the EU trust that a group once designated and treated as a terrorist organization will genuinely confront its ideological cousins for the sake of European security interests? This is a dangerous gamble. It risks repeating the mistakes of the past by substituting wishful thinking for strategic reality. And if that gamble fails, the next catastrophe may not be in World Trade Center, rather it may unfold in Europe itself.

Less emotion, more reason. During the Republic, Afghans kept migrating despite massive security spending. If the Taliban were solely responsible for insecurity then, how have they maintained security today with far fewer resources? Criticism without research solves little.
