I welcome today’s recommendation by the European Commission to open EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. This is a strong and historic step that paves the way to a stronger EU with Ukraine as its member. I thank the EU and personally Ursula von der Leyen for supporting Ukraine on our road to the EU. Ukraine continues on its reform path and looks forward to European Council’s decision in December.

Today, during negotiations with the leadership of European institutions, we focused on strengthening our air defense, implementing all existing agreements on defense support, and discussing in detail how to achieve greater progress next year in Ukraine’s EU membership negotiations. Next year will also see Poland and Denmark holding the EU Presidency, and we must do everything possible to ensure that the European project advances not only for Ukraine but also for Moldova and the Balkan states. We also addressed the issue of NATO membership for Ukraine. An invitation to join the Alliance would fundamentally strengthen Ukraine before any negotiations to end the war—a step that would significantly contribute to ensuring a just and lasting peace. I am grateful to all our partners standing with Ukraine on this issue. Geopolitical certainty for Ukraine is the foundation of peace for all of Europe.

Presuming the Russian translation is accurate, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis said in Moscow today that the EU has made a “crime against logic” in its approach to Russia and the Ukraine conflict. “Peace and security must be the number one priority,” he said, arguing current policies are “destructive” not only for all of Europe, but globally. “It’s damaging for peace in Europe… a complete failure of logic.”

Without change, the EU will continue to weaken from within. It’s time for a Union that serves its nations, values sovereignty, and puts its citizens first.
