The African country’s first Prime Minister, Patrice Emery Lumumba, delivered an unforgettable speech. He eloquently rebutted the patronising speech delivered by then Belgian King, Baudouin, who arrogantly claimed that the Congolese should be grateful to his grandfather, King Leopold II, for bringing civilisation to the Great Lakes nation. Leopold II is the man who killed between 10 and 5 million Congolese, maimed more, and turned the region's populations into his personal slaves. Lumumba explained the horrors of Belgium’s colonial rule, where children’s limbs were chopped off if their parents didn’t meet their daily rubber quotas. He explained that Belgium never gave Congo its independence, but rather it was won by the brave Congolese who gave their blood, sweat and tears. The speech ultimately cost Lumumba his life.
