The Conservatives seem to have a real difficulty understanding National Security. In the Chagos Islands debate, I had to explain the deal 3 times-they’re clearly ignoring plain English As they well know, we never confirm where nuclear weapons are stored. Security must come first.

“When did Jonathan Powell travel to Port Louis, was it prior to his appointment as the PM’s Special Envoy and what security clearance did he have when he saw the Chagos deal for the first time?” Jonathan Powell, the current National Security Advisor saw the Chagos deal in August 2024, prior to his appointment as the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the British Indian Ocean Territory. What security clearance did he have? Correspondence between Powell and the FCDO was being conducted over insecure email. Powell himself was allegedly still working in China for his Inter Mediate consultancy whilst privy to discussions on the detail of the deal. Meanwhile the Government refuses to face scrutiny and answer any Named Day Written Parliamentary Questions. The Government sent the wrong minister to the Chagos Islands UQ and Hamish Falconer floundered his way through it; a truly terrible appearance at the Despatch Box. What is it about the Chagos Islands deal that this Government is trying so hard to conceal?

Chagos islands: the US Administration are furious that they were deliberately misled by the Government over their legal position. It is irresponsible and negligent to give away our sovereignty and damage our national security. Who in the Government will resign when the US refuse to sign this terrible deal. Pathetic response by a juvenile minster!

Kemi Badenoch humiliates herself over the Chagos islands at PMQs She started by criticising Labour's action on the Chagos islands Keir Starmer explains it's a military base vital our national security, explaining that is why the Conservatives opened negotiations about sovereignty and securing the long term usage of the base Starmer adds that it was the Conservatives who conducted 11 of the 13 rounds of the negotiations Starmer adds that if Badenoch has been briefed on Chagos she understands the situation, and if she isn't officially briefed, "she's not doing her job, she's not concerned about national security" Badenoch then waffles a bit and insults Starmer Starmer observes she didn't say she was briefed about the Chagos islands saying "When she became leader of the opposition I said to her I would give her a briefing on any national security issue if she asked for it" "She has not asked for a briefing on the CHagos islands" "That's because she's more interested in chasing Reform, than in national security" Badenoch agains deflects saying, "He doesn't know what's going on" Starmer, "She doesn't even want to know what's going on otherwise she would have asked for the relevant briefing" Badenoch then claims she's speaking on behalf of the country and that "when Labour negotiates our country loses" Starmer, "All she does is come here every week carping from the sidelines talking our country down"
