To grow it in the way Federer, Nadal, & Djokovic did before you…” Carlos: “Not really. I don’t think about it, being a good ambassador for tennis. But obviously at the same time the way I play, I just try to entertain the people, trying to engage people to watch more tennis. A part of that is.. I’m not thinking that I have to be the best ambassador possible to tennis. It’s just stepping on the court, I’m doing what I love to do. Just playing tennis. That is the best way I can be a good ambassador. It’s about loving what you’re doing and enjoy every single second you step on the court. I think that’s it. Even one of the greatest tennis players of all time lost almost half his points. His lesson: Don’t dwell on every mistake. A double fault, a lost point, even a bad day, it’s just one point. The champions move on quickly with the same focus and fire for the next one. This is one of the best mindset lessons I’ve heard in a long time. It applies way beyond tennis. Life is full of losses and setbacks. The difference between average and exceptional is how quickly you reset and keep playing.

Starts by saying “I don’t know” then gives an incredible four-part answer: ▫️Modern coaches grew up playing two-handed backhand and passed it down to students. ▫️One-handed backhands take a lot of time to perfect control and coaches/players don’t want to dedicate the time when they can make faster improvements elsewhere. ▫️Tennis went from 50/50 between baseline and net play to 90/10 baseline play (two-handed backhands much more useful for defensive and sliding baseline play). ▫️Equipment for tennis has changed (stiffer strings, modern rackets, heavier balls) and slower surfaces…more difficult to attack with only one hand. *** Tennis Channel link:

In the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80% of those matches." Then he asked them to guess a second number: "Now, I have a question for you. What percentage of points do you think I won in those matches? Only 54%. In other words, even top-ranked tennis players win barely more than half of the points they play." What that does to you over a career: "When you lose every second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot. You teach yourself to think, okay, I double-faulted, it's only a point. Okay, I came to the net, then I got passed again, it's only a point." It applies to the good ones too: "Even a great shot, an overhead back-end smash that ends up on ESPN's top-10 playlist. I’m a huge Tom Brady fan… There are a few interesting comments here from him that are indicative of personal preference. “I had no friends on any other team” “Anger helped me. The more I could create an enemy” We have to be very careful when we listen to comments from players about their ideal competitive self. Case studies of one. What helps them may hinder others… You can have friends on other teams and be a brutal, ruthless competitor. That is possible. Perhaps a useful case study can be seen in tennis. Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, and Andy Murray. Seemingly , good friends…but on court a will to slice and dice the games’ of their mate. And then anger… Well, anger can surge energy that becomes useful for the execution of actions…technical, tactical, and (especially) physical actions. But anger can also distract. Players may focus on the experience of anger more so than the tasks at hand. Anger can create a degree of perceptual tunnel-vision that can cause players to miss cues. And anger can burn through energetic resources quickly, creating fatigue and lethargy all too quickly. Performance is never straight-forward…and the performance mindset is individual-specific…
