🤣 Voice imitations of players are fun, but imitations of playing styles and subtle on court behaviours are SO much better. This guy nails it as: Murray Djokovic Wawrinka (the subtlety in this one is superb) Federer Nadal Kyrgios Tsitsipas Del Potro Thiem Stelios Gkontsaris YT 👏

“All three are incredible players, but Roger is the most spectacular one to watch play. If you compare these three monsters from a technical point of view, you realize that Federer is pure tennis.” - Richard Gasquet The Big Three weren’t built the same. Nadal conquered with relentless baseline aggression. Djokovic dominated with elite counterpunching. But Federer embraced the entire court, blending baseline play, net rushing, slice and serve-and-volley into one complete game, making him the ultimate all-court master.

Throwback, Serena Williams in the late night show : “Andy Murray would beat me 6-0,6-0 in like 10 minutes…Men and women’s tennis are two different sports. I love to play with women…” What’s your expectation for Battle of sexes (Kyrgios vs Aryna) ?

The 8 minutes that changed tennis history forever 👇 A masterclass on mental toughness (in less than 2-min) Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer. at U.S. Open semifinals. (September 10, 2011). By the way, I often come back to watch this video to get motivated. In the last set of the match, Federer took a 40–15 lead. Victory was just one serve away. The crowd roared for Federer. Djokovic, clearly annoyed, shot a grimace at the fans and mimicked them, which only got him more boos. Federer served hard, out wide to Djokovic’s forehand. But Djokovic smacked the ball with full force for a stunning cross-court winner. Federer was stunned. One shot that broke Federer’s rhythm—and spirit. It was one of the earliest signs of Djokovic's ability to turn crowd hostility into a dark energy that fueled his game. So, what makes Djokovic so formidable? → When everything is on the line, he almost never falters. → The higher the pressure, the more likely he is to win. → He thrives under intense pressure when others crumble. As Holger Rune, world No. 6, put it: "His mindset. Even when you play great points, it feels like it doesn't faze him at all." That’s the winning formula. The mindset. If you liked it, follow me Stefan Smulders for more thoughts about business, mindset, and life.

Carlos Alcaraz was asked if he feels a responsibility as the world #1 to be an ambassador for the good of tennis the way Federer, Nadal, & Djokovic did before him “As the world #1 and one of the biggest names in tennis, do you feel a responsibility to be an ambassador for the sport? To grow it in the way Federer, Nadal, & Djokovic did before you…” Carlos: “Not really. I don’t think about it, being a good ambassador for tennis. But obviously at the same time the way I play, I just try to entertain the people, trying to engage people to watch more tennis. A part of that is.. I’m not thinking that I have to be the best ambassador possible to tennis. It’s just stepping on the court, I’m doing what I love to do. Just playing tennis. That is the best way I can be a good ambassador. It’s about loving what you’re doing and enjoy every single second you step on the court. I think that’s it. That’s all that’s in my mind.” (via Australian Open Press)

There is no single “correct” path to the top. Novak Djokovic went 3 years without sugar, let one piece of chocolate melt on his tongue after the longest tennis match ever… then went straight back to training. Roger Federer won the Australian Open eating ice cream every single night. George Mack’s point: Djokovic’s extreme discipline vs Federer’s relaxed enjoyment. Stephen King raw-dogging novels vs J.K. Rowling using spreadsheets. Buffett reading everything vs Jim Simons using algorithms. At the highest level, the winners pick what works for them.

“Here you can’t predict the ball bounce or movement. They can do whatever they want, but I won’t be here next year if this clay stays.” - Djokovic “I never was in control of the match, I didn’t know how to win a point… I was not good enough to adapt my game to this court. If things continue like this, it will be very sad. Next year this will be one less event for my calendar.” - Nadal While Nadal and Djokovic failed to adapt to Madrid’s blue clay, Federer adapted with ease, further reinforcing why he is widely regarded as the most talented and complete player across all surfaces.

Do watch this inspiring speech by Roger Federer on lessons from his life, couple of days back. His wisdom extends far beyond the tennis court, offering valuable insights for all of us: 1. Effortless is a Myth: What felt like his seemingly effortless play was the result of years of hard work and discipline. He recalled an early career incident that made him realize the need for mental discipline and intense training to achieve success. 2. It’s Only a Point: He highlighted the importance of not dwelling on individual failures, drawing from his tennis stats where he won only 54% of points despite being the greatest player ever. Federer emphasized resilience, the ability to move on from setbacks, and maintaining focus on the next challenge. 3. Life is Bigger than the Court: There is a life beyond professional achievements. He spoke about his foundation aimed at providing early childhood education in Africa, underscoring the significance of contributing to a cause larger than oneself. Please share for wider reach so that it makes an impact on someone's life! #Federer #Lifelessons #Goat

Roger Federer dropped some real wisdom in his Dartmouth commencement speech: He won nearly 80% of his 1,526 professional matches, but only 54% of the points he played. Even one of the greatest tennis players of all time lost almost half his points. His lesson: Don’t dwell on every mistake. A double fault, a lost point, even a bad day, it’s just one point. The champions move on quickly with the same focus and fire for the next one. This is one of the best mindset lessons I’ve heard in a long time. It applies way beyond tennis. Life is full of losses and setbacks. The difference between average and exceptional is how quickly you reset and keep playing.

Roger Federer was asked why the one-handed backhand is dissappearing from tennis. Starts by saying “I don’t know” then gives an incredible four-part answer: ▫️Modern coaches grew up playing two-handed backhand and passed it down to students. ▫️One-handed backhands take a lot of time to perfect control and coaches/players don’t want to dedicate the time when they can make faster improvements elsewhere. ▫️Tennis went from 50/50 between baseline and net play to 90/10 baseline play (two-handed backhands much more useful for defensive and sliding baseline play). ▫️Equipment for tennis has changed (stiffer strings, modern rackets, heavier balls) and slower surfaces…more difficult to attack with only one hand. *** Tennis Channel link:

Roger Federer told Dartmouth's graduating class the number he thinks explains his whole career: "In tennis, perfection is impossible. In the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80% of those matches." Then he asked them to guess a second number: "Now, I have a question for you. What percentage of points do you think I won in those matches? Only 54%. In other words, even top-ranked tennis players win barely more than half of the points they play." What that does to you over a career: "When you lose every second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot. You teach yourself to think, okay, I double-faulted, it's only a point. Okay, I came to the net, then I got passed again, it's only a point." It applies to the good ones too: "Even a great shot, an overhead back-end smash that ends up on ESPN's top-10 playlist. That, too, is just a point." The part that matters is what he does with the point once it ends: "When you're playing a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world, and it is. But when it's behind you, it's behind you. This mindset is really crucial, because it frees you to fully commit to the next point at the next point after that. With intensity, clarity, and focus." And his definition of the best players alive: "The best in the world are not the best because they win every point. It's because they know they lose again and again and have learned how to deal with it." - Roger Federer (Roger Federer) on Dartmouth Commencement (Dartmouth 🌲) Refusing to carry the last point is the same skill as refusing to carry the day's open loops to bed. That one is the sixth fix in my new cortisol piece.

How do you survive at the top of tennis in the strongest era the sport has ever seen? Kyle Edmund reached world number 14, became British number one, made a Grand Slam semi-final, won two ATP titles…and played against the likes of Djokovic, Nadal & Federer. But what does it take to get there, stay there and then work out who you are when it ends. Kyle Edmund left home at 13 to pursue tennis properly. By the time most people are still working out what they want to do, he had already committed to one of the most demanding individual sports in the world. No team to hide behind. No shared responsibility. No guaranteed income unless you win. And as Kyle explains, even reaching the top does not remove the pressure. Coaches. Physios. Travel. Hotels. Taxes. Agents. The costs of staying competitive are enormous, and unless you are consistently winning at the highest level, the business of being a tennis player is far more fragile than people realise. Then there is the other side… Injuries. Retirement at 30; the reality of waking up one day without the thing that has defined your life since childhood. This is a rare look inside the world of elite tennis from someone who has lived every part of it. All on Business of Sport 🔥 (links below)

I’m a huge Tom Brady fan… There are a few interesting comments here from him that are indicative of personal preference. “I had no friends on any other team” “Anger helped me. The more I could create an enemy” We have to be very careful when we listen to comments from players about their ideal competitive self. Case studies of one. What helps them may hinder others… You can have friends on other teams and be a brutal, ruthless competitor. That is possible. Perhaps a useful case study can be seen in tennis. Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, and Andy Murray. Seemingly , good friends…but on court a will to slice and dice the games’ of their mate. And then anger… Well, anger can surge energy that becomes useful for the execution of actions…technical, tactical, and (especially) physical actions. But anger can also distract. Players may focus on the experience of anger more so than the tasks at hand. Anger can create a degree of perceptual tunnel-vision that can cause players to miss cues. And anger can burn through energetic resources quickly, creating fatigue and lethargy all too quickly. Performance is never straight-forward…and the performance mindset is individual-specific…
