This 272 km long Udampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway project was sanctioned in March 1995, when Shri PV Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister. In March 2002, it was taken forward and declared a national project by Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji's government. Subsequently, there have been five major projects undertaken under the leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh—the last one in 2013—before PM Modi's visit today. So, roughly two-thirds of the whole project was already completed, and about 100 km of it was left, which is being inaugurated now.
