Charlotte Sometimes by The Cure is inspired by the book of the same title, written by Penelope Farmer in 1969. Charlotte is a new girl at her boarding school in 1958. Falling asleep in her dormitory she wakes up to find herself in 1918, in the same school but in the body of another girl named Clare Mobley. At the same time Clare wakes up in Charlotte's time and in her body. This switch happens every few days and the girls communicate by notes left in an exercise book. Over the course of the novel Charlotte begins to question her identity, until she becomes trapped in the past as the Spanish Flu epidemic strikes. It's a powerful story of finding out who you are through loss, and the time travel elements are handled deftly. It's a very sad and haunting tale for a children's book - no wonder The Cure based one of their more ethereal songs around it!
