Reverse engineering MW2 has little or nothing to do with breaking encryption algorithms and finding vulns in software implementations of said encryption. Unfortunately another case of baseless fear mongering.

I was mostly** referring to decomplication- which in itself is extremely difficult. It's about this being a stepping stone. I'm not saying that the models out now can decrypt complex algorithms. But at this rate, it doesn't even matter anymore if it can decompile 😭

Profilbild von sudo
sudovor 23 Tagen

I think you're missing the point entirely. Decompilation is not a risk to software. Its a risk to asshole billionaires trying to gate keep code for personal profit. All of these 'secure' systems rely on open source code. Every one.

Protecting code is not a sin, just like protecting money in a bank. The code is what made any digital product successful.

Profilbild von sudo

No one here is calling that a sin. You must be joking. Obscurity is not security. This is secure software 101. You ever heard of patents and trademarks before?

complete nonsense btw. computer illiteracy will kill us before ai does

Profilbild von Jaden Williams

I could make nearly a dozen arguments defending why what I wrote was valid, but anyone could reasonably say that compiled code acts as a “wall of protection” around a codebase. If it didn’t, companies would have their proprietary repos stolen and replicated left and right.

Profilbild von nx
nxvor 23 Tagen

the code was never encrypted. institutions and network boundaries are the only things saving us here, which was true before ai and will be true after. you can tell me ai accelerates postings on the pirate bay but it doesnt make it anymore legal.

Uh, no? Security by obscurity is not security at all. AI can't magically crack encryption algorithms. Reverse engineering software is something entirely different than hacking into bank accounts.

Profilbild von Jaden Williams
Jaden Williamsvor 23 Tagen

I didn't intent to say compiled code = encryption or that AI can magically crack complex algo. I’m saying compiled code creates a practical barrier to understanding a codebase. If AI makes reverse engineering significantly easier, that barrier gets weaker and that absolutely has security implications. I hope that makes sense.

Profilbild von David Furmánek 🇺🇦 🇪🇺
David Furmánek 🇺🇦 🇪🇺vor 23 Tagen

I just don't buy this angle, because you know, open source exists. Compiled code or not should not matter. And of course AI can find bugs in systems. That is why it's useful!

Profilbild von Much4Less

This makes total sense if you don't know about the P != NP problem. AI will improve security because if it can deobscure code it can obscure it to very great proportions. The problem won't be that the AI couldn't break encryption it but that it will be financially infeasible or just straight up take decades. So basically, we will just land at the same point as today That is as long as P != NP is actually true which isn't proven yet

so just devise stronger and more complex security, like weve always had to do since the invention of the computer? the obfuscation methods in the 90s were obviously not as good as the ones we have now

What the fuck does reverse engineering software have to do with encryption lmfao You do realize encryption is still safe right, regardless of how smart AI becomes I guess you could argue that ai can speed up quantum computer development which could break some encryption

good argument, but a bit overblown. Humans will adapt, adopt the technology, and everything will just get faster to produce and we'll have more capabilities in our hands to make cool stuff. There will always be a market of people who don't want to touch that stuff and invest time

this is just wrong. security through obfuscation is never the answer, and these tools are going to punish people who believe in that ideology the fear mongering behind AI is really dumb.

Having spent 200B tokens on decompiling melee, the reason this doesn't hold up is that you need the ROM and the compiler used, you can then do a pass, see the diff and infer what the compiler did. You have full access to the system, yes security will need to be beefed up, but every corp worth their salt is currently doing that
