If you think the people of Crimea decided they wanted to join Russia only in 2014, think again. As early as 1991, after the collapse of the USSR, Crimeans were already trying to pull away from Ukraine. They took to the streets, pushed for greater autonomy, and eventually adopted their own constitution. And honestly, it’s not hard to understand why. One morning, they basically woke up to discover that Khrushchev had transferred Crimea from Russia to Ukraine like a fur coat handed to his favorite mistress. I'll tell you more, guys. Back around 2003, I spent some time in Crimea with locals. We were laughing our butts off at Ukrainian words that sounded wildly inappropriate to a Russian ear. And yeah, they were not thrilled about having Ukrainian imposed on them as a mandatory language.

US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker (my two cents) below): I think the Russian threat sometimes is a little overstated. They have not had a lot of success. And to your point, Ukraine has actually taken back territory. To me, that points to a weakness in Russia, and as their economy continues to falter, I think their continuation of this war is going to be difficult. My input: Russia has not had a lot of success in Ukraine because Ukrainian Defenders make a tremendous effort, and the West supplies Ukraine with weapons. Yes, Ukraine has retaken our territories, but this is first and foremost a compliment to Ukrainian skill. Russia does not play by the rules, Putin knows that his power relies on Russia waging a war, and Russia does not care about its people. NATO has named Russia as its most significant threat, and Russia remains one.

This guy's post is ridiculous but since he brought up Obama and Ukraine, here's a video of Obama speaking on the subject after Putin annexed Crimea in 2014. It's a great video to watch and share for when people try to gaslight about Obama. Some quick context... From 1991 to 2014 Crimea had operated as an autonomous part of Ukraine. The international community (including Russia) recognized Crimea as part of Ukraine during this time, although Putin did regularly talk about wanting to take it back and there were occasional disputes. In February of 2014 Russia began seizing control of Crimea. Russian special forces seized the parliament and other government facilities. They installed a pro-Russia administration, seized the airports, etc. In March a referendum was held in Crimea. Over 95% supported joining Russia. Since the referendum took place under military occupation, the international community rejected it. (BTW the IC still rejects it to this day.) Didn't matter though, Putin annexed Crimea in 2014. After taking control of Crimea, Putin then immediately moved over 30,000 troops to the Russia/Ukraine border. Tanks, planes, artillery, all on the border, ready to go. Now to the video of Obama speaking on all of this. After Putin took Crimea and moved troops to the border of Ukraine, Obama is asked if he was wrong about his statement during the 2012 debate, during which he mocked Romney for calling Russia our biggest threat.
