The drivable par-4 12th hole at TPC Sawgrass has been modified again for this week's Players. As Scot Sherman (Love Golf Design) told me on the latest episode of Designing Golf, the lake on the left has been extended back toward the tee, allowing for more visibility of the... location of the water. Also — and more interestingly — a bunker has been added on the right side of the fairway (see first image from 2025 vs. last image from 2026). This will likely complicate what has become the standard play when the tee is up: rip driver or 3-wood just right of the green and take what you get (see scatter plot from the third round last year). This year, no one will want to be stuck with that 40- to 50-yard bunker shot to a green that runs away toward water. We'll see how it works out. I'm not convinced the hole is salvageable.show more

Took a walk around Lakewood CC this past wknd for the first time since December to see how the course held up through the winter. Everything looks good. We are ready for some spring sun and warmth to begin the growth season. A big question I get is what was done to the Great Hazard on #6 which is now #15. It was completely redone. Moved about 15-20 yds forward so a lay up is a shorter shot. The left side was opened up and fairway expanded to allow for a bail out if you don’t take on the entire span. The hazard itself was sunken down about 3 ft to allow you to see it from the tee and fairway. It was also expanded diagonally to the right as that side is where you want to come in from on your third shot but you better make sure you can clear the top right of it. The last pic compliments of J. Liebert Golf Pics is the before version. I’d say the new version is pretty darn good.

The 5th hole at New South Wales Golf Club near Sydney. Quite simply one of the world’s greatest golf holes. Sometimes you dream of playing a golf hole and it doesn’t quite meet expectations. This one exceeds them. The tee shot is truly thrilling. You are trying to hit blind over the hill in the distance. Death on the left, not much better on the right. If a player misses one badly to the right and finds the pool, she’ll get free relief as it’s a TIO (temporary immovable obstruction). Got me to thinking, has there ever been a situation in professional golf where a player hit into a body of water and received no penalty?
