This Liberal idea that militias were "slave patrols" is completely insane and does not jibe AT ALL with historical data. It would be fairer to say they were borne out of regional conflicts with natives, in the absence of organized governmental response to such threats on short notice. The structure was easily repurposed for other things like responding to the Revolutionary War. It's also fair to say that not all militias fought for one side (the Tories had them too). The same crowd also claims police forces in the US were derived from Slave patrols too. Which completely ignored the English tradition of town watchmen or Sheriffs. But in the end, Liberals care about "emotional narratives" not facts or history (whcih can be dirty and not clearly follow modern concepts).
