This was stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, noting that creating a drone reserve makes no sense due to rapid progress in this field and the immediate obsolescence of drones. This is the work of my friend on an SPG from the 56th Mechanized Brigade. They’ve been using them from dugouts throughout the brigade. Moving howitzers is too dangerous, so they try to change positions as little as possible — it increases their chances of survival. That’s why these positions must be extremely well built, and the howitzers need additional protection in the form of cages. Obviously, sacrificing mobility isn’t ideal, but it allows artillery to remain viable and effective. Artillery works well with drones and will continue to be a crucial part of the battlefield for years to come. I’m currently fundraising to provide the brigade with two excavators. They’ll be used to support artillery, drone operators, command and control positions, and infantry. Excavators help our troops stay safe under the worst bombardments. Its microwave system "Leonidas" for the first time hit a drone with fiber-optic control - one of the most difficult targets for modern electronic warfare means. Previously, the complex had already hit a swarm of 49 drones, but the new test was particularly significant. In December 2025, at a closed test range of the US Army, the system was able to disable a fiber-optic UAV, depriving it of control and causing an uncontrolled fall. In one case, a Ukrainian UGV tried to blind an approaching Russian FPV drone but failed. The second example was more successful a “Baba Yaga” drone was able to confuse the operator of an anti-drone interceptor that was attempting to shoot it down. For now, this cannot be called widespread, but in the future such a blinding system may become an effective method of countering FPV drones, especially fiber-optic-guided ones, which cannot be jammed by electronic warfare at all. And, as can be seen, the system can be installed on both ground and aerial platforms. So it turns out the outdated Passive Protection Systems (PPS) like the Shtora-1 so common in the late Soviet/Russian/Ukranian like the T-90A are state of the art now.

Since the beginning of 2025 alone, and just based on objective monitoring data, the Kiev forces have lost at least 150 self-propelled artillery units of various types, most of which were taken out by FPV drones. 122 mm artillery systems with a max firing range of up to 15 (20) km have ended up completely inside the expanding-in-depth (longer drone range) and denser (more drones used) “dead zone” of precision FPV drones. 152 (155 mm) artillery systems are also gradually sinking into this “FPV abyss,” taking heavy losses. Tube artillery still has a big impact on the course of the fighting, but during this Special Military Operation, it’s facing a challenge that could really “knock over the throne” of the God of War. There were reports on production and contracts—from FPV drones to long-range ones—as well as on solutions aimed at more effectively destroying the occupiers and protecting the lives of our soldiers. We have technological proposals that need to be implemented, and I am grateful to all our military personnel, every company, every official, and every volunteer involved in this effort to continuously modernize the Ukrainian army. There was also a report on robotic systems, as well as on artillery—both our domestic production and global procurement, with a focus on ammunition. It is important that Ukraine has good dynamics in artillery production, and our own capabilities to supply the army will only increase.

Losses of expensive equipment for the IDF are becoming routine. In the Shomera area, a Hezbollah FPV drone struck at least the third Iron Dome air defense system launcher in a month. The video was filmed on May 18, but published today. Based on the footage, the drone hit the containers with air defense missiles directly again: if they're not empty, this usually leads to detonation and destruction. Notably, all the launchers struck by Hezbollah were deployed near the Lebanese border. The IDF is trying to protect border settlements this way: with air defense positioned further away, it simply doesn't have time to react to a launch. 🖍Overall, this is another illustration of how, amid the "drone revolution," traditional air defense systems increasingly turn from hunter into prey.
