2024, Vietnam: A 34-year-old man arrived at the hospital with intense abdominal pain. Scans revealed a foreign object; surgeons removed a live 30cm (about 1-foot) eel from his abdomen. It had apparently entered via the rectum, traveled through the colon, bitten through the intestine, and was still alive. The patient couldn't (or wouldn't) explain how it got there.

A 31-year-old Indian man was admitted to Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi with severe abdominal pain after inserting a 66 cm live eel into his rectum for stimulation. The eel migrated into his large intestine, biting through the bowel wall. Attempts to remove it were blocked by a second object, a lemon, forcing an emergency surgery. Surgeons extracted the eel alive via an abdominal incision, then removed the lemon through the anus, repaired the colon, and cleaned the contaminated cavity. Source - Medical Media

This is an extremely rare medical emergency. Aquatic animals can accidentally enter the body in contaminated water, but they cannot live there long. Such cases cause severe internal injury, infection, and require immediate surgical care. It is dangerous, not survivable without treatment, and fully preventable with basic water safety.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰? A 50-year-old man in China had a half-meter eel removed from his abdomen after it entered through his rectum during a failed home “treatment.” Surgeons found it alive and moving inside his body. 😳🩺

In today’s world, Eels are naturally ingested in Asia, used as Traditional Chinese Medicine for strengthening Qi and curing sexual weakness.
