A 26-year-old nurse was allegedly attacked with acid and repeatedly assaulted with a machete by her estranged husband in full public view in Bengaluru on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 9.15 am near a private clinic when the woman stepped out for breakfast. She is currently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital and her condition is reported to be critical. The victim, identified as Madhumita, who hails from Kolkata in West Bengal, had been working as a nurse at the clinic for around one-and-a-half years. According to police, her husband Venkatesh had arrived on a motorcycle and was waiting for her near the clinic. Police said the couple, who got married in Madurai in 2024, had been living separately for around a year following a family dispute and were not in contact with each other. According to the police, Venkatesh allegedly chased Madhumita after she came out of the clinic. She ran towards the cellar parking area in an attempt to escape, but the accused allegedly caught hold of her and threw acid on her. He then grabbed her by the hair and repeatedly attacked her with a machete. The assault unfolded in full public view, triggering panic among onlookers. Hearing her screams, several people rushed to help and raised an alarm. However, the accused allegedly brandished the machete at those who attempted to intervene, preventing them from approaching the victim. Some members of the public reportedly tried to rescue Madhumita by pelting stones at the accused, but were unable to overpower him. As the situation turned violent, a traffic police sub-inspector, who was managing traffic at a nearby signal, rushed to the spot. Police said the officer intervened while locals were pelting stones at the accused. The accused allegedly then turned on the officer and attacked him with the machete. The PSI reportedly managed to knock the weapon out of the accused's hand using a stick before securing him. The accused was subsequently handed over to the police and taken into custody. The shocking incident took place in the Badousa police station area on Thursday and has triggered widespread outrage across the district. According to police, the woman had been in a relationship with a young man from her neighbourhood. On May 18, she left home with him, prompting her family to file a complaint. A case was subsequently registered and police launched a search operation to trace her. Banda Superintendent of Police Palash Bansal said the woman was found safe on June 12 and brought back as part of the legal process. Her parents were informed and were called for discussions and counselling with police officials. During the interaction, the woman reportedly maintained that she wanted to stay with her husband. Police said she had married the man after leaving home and was unwilling to return to her family despite repeated attempts by relatives and officials to persuade her otherwise. According to investigators, tensions escalated during the counselling session when her father suddenly attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon, stabbing her in the abdomen. The injured woman was rushed to the Atarra Community Health Centre and later referred to a medical college for advanced treatment. However, doctors declared her dead. SP Bansal said that based on a complaint lodged by the victim's mother, police registered a murder case against the woman's father. The accused has been taken into custody and the weapon used in the crime has been recovered. "The woman had been safely recovered and her family was informed. During counselling and discussions with her parents, her father attacked her with a sharp weapon. A case has been registered and the accused has been detained. Further legal proceedings are underway," the SP said. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and initiated further investigation into the case. The incident has drawn attention across Banda, with many describing it as a suspected case of honour killing. However, police have so far registered the case as murder and said further investigation will determine all circumstances leading to the killing.

The incident came to light after a video of the girl being verbally abused and physically assaulted by the group went viral on social media. The four girls had covered their faces with scarves. An FIR has since been lodged, but none of the girls or the boy allegedly involved with them has been detained so far. The victim and the four girls who allegedly assaulted her, are said to be students of a prominent private college in Satna district. The alleged incident took place on August 5, 2026. The BBA student said her close female friend called her to Semariya crossing. At around 2.30 pm, the friend took her on a scooter on the pretext of visiting a relative’s house. Instead, she took her to a deserted place near the Nagar Van (city forests). When the BBA student reached the spot, three other female students were already there. The four girls allegedly assaulted her for refusing to enter into a relationship with a young male student who had been regularly troubling her on WhatsApp. The viral video, possibly filmed by one of the four girls, shows them verbally abusing and repeatedly punching and kicking the BBA student. She alleged that they also attacked her with a wooden stick. In the video, one of the girls is seen attempting to strangle her. One of the girls can be heard shouting, “You are trying to become a leader, you’ll be buried.” The BBA second-year student alleged that the four girls were forcing her to enter into a relationship with the youth, who they said would pay her money. When she refused, they assaulted her, causing injuries to her right ear, back and other parts of her body. The ordeal ended only after she apologised to the youth on a video call. A woman police sub-inspector (WPSI), attached to the KR Puram traffic police station, was seen in a video allegedly slapping a law student and holding him by the collar over a traffic-related issue. The PSI has filed a complaint alleging that four men assaulted, verbally abused and threatened her while she was on duty at Bhattarahalli Signal on August 12. Around 8.45 am that day, the law student, Hemanth, and a car driver, Shreyas, were involved in a road rage incident and were fighting in the middle of the road, holding up traffic. Police Constable Manjunath, who was near the traffic junction, asked them to clear the street for traffic, which enraged Hemanth, who allegedly abused the constable, a police officer said. When WPSI Nayana D intervened and questioned Hemanth about the argument, he allegedly introduced himself as a lawyer and confronted her. He allegedly abused her vulgarly, which may have led her to slap him, the officer said. Hemanth’s family members also allegedly body-shamed her, the officer added. The KR Puram police registered a case based on the complaint filed by the PSI against Hemanth Reddy, Rahul, Harshith Reddy, Radhakrishna Reddy and others under Sections 74 (assault or use of criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt), 132 (assault or use of criminal force against a public servant to deter them from executing their lawful duty) and other sections of the BNS. As per the FIR, Hemanth allegedly assaulted the PSI. Soon after his friend Rahul arrived at the spot and allegedly grabbed Nayana’s right hand, pulled her and assaulted her, injuring one of her fingers. Nayana said she pushed him aside in self-defence and asked an assistant sub-inspector present at the spot to call the emergency helpline 112. Soon after, Hemanth’s brother Harshith Reddy and father Radhakrishna Reddy too arrived at the spot along with others. She alleged in the complaint that the men abused her using derogatory language and threatened her with consequences, including getting her removed from service. She alleged that they photographed and videographed her, and threatened to upload the clips on social media. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic East) Sahil Bagla was unavailable for comment on any action taken against the PSI. The police have issued notices to the suspects.
