#SEONGHWA about meeting DPRIAN 😭🩶 ⭐️: Yesterday, I finally had time in my schedule.. actually, more than my schedule permitting it, hyungnim had time in his and he also happened to be in LA, so I went to see him. He said he wanted to show me around his studio and somehow everything just lined up… so I became a successful fan! Yesterday was actually the first time I got to meet him and he greeted me really warmly ㅎㅎ When I arrived to the practice room he was blowing bubbles, like this, to welcome me. So it was very ㅎㅎ very fun and heartwarming. He gave me a tour of the studio and ordered pizza for us to share. While we were eating, I asked him a lot of questions about things I was curious about, like music video behind stories and details about songs of his I love. You know the way we interpret a song differs depending on the listener, but I wanted to hear directly from him what kind of feeling he had when creating those songs. I wanted to hear the real stories from the person who made them, so I asked a lot of those kinds of questions. And it was really fascinating because what I had in mind was actually very similar to what hyungnim had intended. So that was very fascinating. He also told me so many kind and encouraging things… it really motivated me a lot, especially in what I’m doing now. So, ever since I came to the U.S. I was hoping I could meet him and get his autograph. I went all over the place trying to find a CD… but wow, everything was sold out! So eventually I was like, “Ah, it can’t be helped, I’ll just go without one.” I really like keeping physical albums from artists. For books too, e-books are great too, but there’s something special about being able to touch and feel a real book or album, you know? And then he said that he had left the message section empty on purpose because he was like “I wanted to write something after actually meeting you Seonghwa-ssi and seeing how I felt”. To be honest, I had worried that my visit might feel like a burden or a hassle for him, but it was the opposite. I really, really, really wanted to drop this song last year. When I first put out the snippet, I was so excited - but it was hard to finish it on time because everything was a blur. I was sick and weak and nauseous and tired and my body just wouldn't do what I wanted it to. Even in the snippet video, I wasn't feeling great. I was just trying my best. I adore Chike's voice and I knew it was him that had to be on the song with me. When I asked him to give me a verse, he was so ready to go, but he was out of town. As soon as he came back, he came over to my studio the next day 🥹. I got a lotta respect for him. He didn't know I was pregnant and suffering 😅 Watching this video back now, I can't even understand where the energy came from. When the song was done, I struggled to mix it. Even so, I decided to master it myself. I hate mastering, so I don't know what I thinking. I was so disappointed that I couldn't meet the deadline. Everyone had fallen in love with the song and was asking me to put it out. I didn't have the energy to make content. I don't even remember them recording this video. I asked Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison four questions today at his end-of-season press conference: Me: “You said me and Coach Kidd are aligned, you know the player(s) that he likes. But when it comes to a trade of this magnitude, it’s the main player that led y’all to the finals last season, so I wanted to ask you, what did that conversation look like at the 11th hour when you told him that y’all would be trading Luka Doncic, and do you think it was fair to him to have y’all’s entire team to be built around Luka, and then in the middle of the season him having to pivot to a completely different player to try to make the title run again?” Harrison: “I think there’s some difficulties anytime when you do a trade that big during the middle of the season. My son’s daily diet is a huge game of trial error but he hasn’t given up on trying new things. This man with ARFID is sharing his food fails as he tries new foods his wife is encouraging him to try. It can be very stressful when trying to make sure they are able to eat, it can be frustrating when it’s fail after fail. The first thing I bribed my kid to try was a goldfish cracker. He wanted a new toy so I came up with the idea that I would give him motivation to eat whole dangling the thing he wants me to buy for him. He wanted some new toy btw but I told him I would buy it if he ate one goldfish cracker. While he still forced himself to eat it I don’t think he likes it because he never asks for it. Many other things he will try and says he likes but refuses to eat more of it, just the one bite. That was how I knew he did not like it. I also learned that just because he didn’t like something didn’t mean he didn’t like that specific item, if I gave him a different version of it he sometimes would eat and like it. For example I make home made Mac n cheese which he won’t eat, but he likes the Kraft Easy Mac cups and can make it himself. He’s not a fan of thick home made burgers but likes McDonald’s cheeseburgers. He will get there eventually, I’m just glad he’s willing to try new things.

This man was always excited about Skyline Chili, he’s heard from co-workers how good it was and always wanted to. On his day he happened to be in the vicinity of one and decided to try it out. Immediately when he walked in, he wasn’t greeted at all, in fact they ignored him. The cashier that begrudgingly took his order seemed forced and was bothered by having to serve him. He felt like they made it a point make him feel unwelcome. He ordered the food for dine in, waited a while for it and saw that they packed it in bags to go, further emphasizing how not welcome he was, determined to get the full experience, he sat and ate. He noticed his food was intentionally watered down and disgusting. He was very underwhelmed by this. He was still so upset about being treated so poorly, he left his food and left the restaurant. Would you have tipped them like he did, after they treated him so poorly?

.Naval: There was a story that I read about Elon Musk that really affected me, which was when he was talking to Bill Gates, and Bill Gates had just taken out some huge short on Tesla. It was like a billion dollar short or something. And, Elon was like, “Why would you do that? Why would you short Tesla?” And Bill goes, “Well, you know, I talked to my financial advisors and I looked at the math and there’s no way it’s overvalued. And so I’m going to make money on the short.” And Elon goes, “What do you care about making money? I thought you were into electric cars and climate change and saving the world. What are you doing trying to save a few bucks and betting against Tesla?”. And he just walked away in disgust. And I think he never talked to Bill Gates after that. And that’s when I realized, like, Elon’s a purist. He means what he says. The money is a tool for him to get what he’s trying to do. And so I take him at face value, which is the crazy thing, because a lot of people who set these audacious goals to inspire people, you kind of know they don’t really mean it. Elon, I take at face value. So I really do think he intends to get to Mars. I don’t think he’s joking about that. And I think he means to get there within a defined window of time. And I don’t think it’s just like an inspirational, faraway goal. I think he’s very, very concretely going to do whatever it takes. Because Elon doesn’t want to go down in history as the electric car guy or even the guy who saved America guy. He wants to go down as a guy who got humanity to the stars. Again, I’ll give him more credit than that. I don’t even think he wants to go down as the “I got humanity to the stars” guy. He’s just like, “I want to get to the stars, and so I have to make it happen in this lifetime. The only way that I get to experience the science fiction world in my head is if I get to the stars.” And so that’s so inspirational. I think that drives everything. So I think the government was just a thing that got in his way.

I did feel like it was a lack of respect. At one point it was fine, and then out of nowhere it just went left. I definitely think there’s more to it. There definitely is more to it. I know Brad is getting a lot of criticism, but I just wish more of it could have been explained. I just wish they had the respect to tell me exactly what it was, and I would have understood and respected that… Some of the guys have already reached out from the Celtics, some of the young guys, so I appreciate them… The guys I was able to build with, those guys who reached out to me, all told me, ‘It was a pleasure to play with you, and I appreciate everything that you helped me with,’ so that’s the stuff that gives you more motivation to keep going.”

David Lean on how to direct actors & shares a funny story that happened during the filming of 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (1957) "Interviewer: Could you talk about how you work with your actors? Lean: Dangerous subject. Well, it’s intensely personal. I always try not to speak in a loud voice when I’m talking to an actor on the set. I gently take them aside, and I whisper because I don’t want to give the impression, for their sake, that they are being told to do this or that by a teacher. I try as hard as I can to make them suggest something that I want them to think of. The trouble with actors is that it’s a very di cult job with this damned glass eye looking at them all the time. It’s quite di cult talking to all of you here, but I’d rather talk to all of you than I would have a hundred-millimeter lens pointing at me. It’s so concentrated. It’s part of a director’s job, I think, to get the actor to give as good a performance on the stage as he gave to himself in the bath in the morning. So I try to relieve them of their inhibitions. It doesn’t help if you talk from a great height, from a megaphone, as it were. I try to get their confidence. I try to give them confidence. I can’t bear some actors, the rambunctious types who think they know everything. You’ve got to knock them down and make them realize they don’t know everything. If you’ve really done your homework on the script, you, the director, know the part better than any damned actor because you’ve been at it for months. I’ve had lots of actors who want to change dialogue. I see them doing it. I won’t have it. They took on the script and they’ll stick to it. I’m terribly tempted to tell you a rather long story about Sessue Hayakawa. You know, I nd constantly that actors really are not interested in anything but their own parts. We had a scene in 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (1957) where they had all the troops lined up, and Sessue gets up on the soapbox and talks. We went through a rehearsal, and I said, “What’s wrong?” Because it was the speech and yet it wasn’t the speech. What Sessue had done was to learn all the lines that were only his. He had cut out all the lines that were anybody else’s. The main script was about that thick, and his script was only that thick. He marked only the pages in which he spoke. He had thrown out the rest and bound it together. Now, we came to the scene at the end of the picture. Alec Guinness is looking over the edge of the bridge and he thinks he sees some wires. He goes up to Hayakawa and says, “Colonel Saito, there’s something rather peculiar going on. I think we better go and have a look.” Guinness walked o the bridge, which leads down to the rocks, and Sessue stayed there like a rock. I said, “Go on, Sessue, follow him.” He said, “I follow him?” I said, “Sessue, this is where you nd the wires and where you get killed.” He said, “I get killed?” He had thrown the page away because he had no dialogue. I’ll tell you another story about an actor, though I won’t tell you who it was. He was damn good, but I was kind of dissatisfied. I said, “Look, I understand that an actor is projecting ninety percent to the person he’s playing with, and ten percent is going out toward the camera. Here’s a very small story about the kind of leader Geoff Duncan is, and has been, from my time working with him my first term. When I served in the state Senate, the first bill I ever filed was hijacked. It passed out of the Senate, through House committee, and made it all the way through House Rules, at which point it was yanked back. (I actually appreciated the House GOP leadership for telling me this so plainly—it saved me a lot of time—but essentially I was told: “We like your policy. We don’t like your name on it. So we’re going to give it to a Republican woman.”) And…I get it. Sometimes that’s how it works in this place. It’s about the work, and the policy, not about getting credit. What we actually do and the people we help is what’s most important. But the thing I remember about this process was meeting with Geoff early in my first term, his encouragement, his telling me how he recognized good work when he saw it. I remember the ways he helped me, in the small, invisible ways it takes, to help this first-year nobody in the minority party to move her first bill. And he didn’t like what ultimately happened to that bill, because he believed—has always believed—in people over politics. The following year, that bill came back to us for a final vote. (Without my name in it, of course.) But he saw it, and remembered it, and did something so kind, and frankly unprecedented. He called me up to the rostrum, gave me the gavel, and allowed me to preside over the passage of my own bill. It was the first bill I ever wrote as a lawmaker, and it was ultimately signed into law the Spring of 2022. (Of note, this was also the first and last time we had two women physicians speaking together from the rostrum of the state Senate. And I know there were no subsequent times, because there are still only two of us.) Is this a huge story? No. Was this the most life-changing thing that ever happened in my time at the state Capitol? No. But that’s actually why it’s important. Because the true mark of leadership, and personal character, is what you do when you don’t *have* to. It’s when you show, rather than tell. It’s when you practice mentorship, true bipartisanship, strength of character, and genuine, human kindness, even when no one else might notice or care. Think for a second if we would ever see this in today’s legislative environment. And ask yourself if we would be better to have more moments, and leaders, like this. Geoff is the kind of leader I want to see leading our state. And I know, with our support, that he can win. And that’s why I’m endorsing him to be the next governor of Georgia.

So we’re going to give it to a Republican woman.”) And…I get it. Sometimes that’s how it works in this place. It’s about the work, and the policy, not about getting credit. What we actually do and the people we help is what’s most important. But the thing I remember about this process was meeting with Geoff early in my first term, his encouragement, his telling me how he recognized good work when he saw it. I remember the ways he helped me, in the small, invisible ways it takes, to help this first-year nobody in the minority party to move her first bill. And he didn’t like what ultimately happened to that bill, because he believed—has always believed—in people over politics. The following year, that bill came back to us for a final vote. (Without my name in it, of course.) But he saw it, and remembered it, and did something so kind, and frankly unprecedented. He called me up to the rostrum, gave me the gavel, and allowed me to preside over the passage of my own bill. It was the first bill I ever wrote as a lawmaker, and it was ultimately signed into law the Spring of 2022. (Of note, this was also the first and last time we had two women physicians speaking together from the rostrum of the state Senate. And I know there were no subsequent times, because there are still only two of us.) Is this a huge story? No. Was this the most life-changing thing that ever happened in my time at the state Capitol? No. But that’s actually why it’s important. Because the true mark of leadership, and personal character, is what you do when you don’t have to. It’s when you show, rather than tell. It’s when you practice mentorship, true bipartisanship, strength of character, and genuine, human kindness, even when no one else might notice or care. Think for a second if we would ever see this in today’s legislative environment. And ask yourself if we would be better to have more moments, and leaders, like this. Geoff is the kind of leader I want to see leading our state. And I know, with our support, that he can win. And that’s why I’m endorsing him to be the next governor of Georgia.

Nearly 20 years ago I watched this video in the law library and wept. I don’t remember what I was supposed to be studying. I remember the screen, the headphones, and an old man telling a story about a coat and a pair of worn out shoes and the gospel coming through him so plainly. That’s the thing about Hinckley. He never raised his voice. He didn’t need to. He spoke the way a father speaks when he knows what he knows, quietly, without performance, without trying to convince you. The authority wasn’t borrowed. It wasn’t the authority of a king or an office or a pulpit. It was the authority of a man telling the truth, and you could feel it in your chest before your mind caught up.
