This elephant, Churuli, is an expert at breaking fences. Here he’s using a tree branch to break the fence without electrocuting himself—the main cause of anthropogenic elephant deaths. More about his life here: 1/2 Proposed solutions in this🧵⬇️

Human–elephant conflict, a direct result of habitat conversion and fragmentation—now threatens the survival of elephants across range states in Asia. The spread of human settlements: plantations, industry, farming, mining and linear infrastructures (roads, railway lines, irrigation canals, power lines, pipelines) have squeezed elephant populations into ever-decreasing pockets of forests and have blocked traditional migratory routes. Over the past 16 years, a total of 7,868 human fatalities were recorded from elephant encounters across 16 elephant range states in India , averaging nearly 500 deaths annually. During the same period, 1,653 elephants died from anthropogenic causes, with electrocution (67%), train collisions (15%), poaching (13%), and poisoning (5%) emerging as the most persistent threats. Protected areas are not enough. The elephants need safe corridors so elephants can maintain a larger population for longer term viability This current study below showed that HEC in India is fundamentally a governance and planning problem as much as an ecological one. The findings highlight the need for three main policy shifts: (a) Decentralized conflict governance, with time-bound, locally administered compensation and greater community oversight (b) Mainstreaming HEC into development planning, ensuring that roads, railways, mines, and power infrastructure incorporate elephant-safe design from the outset (c) Performance-based mitigation, with independent monitoring of solar fencing, Rapid Response Teams, and early-warning systems and other mitigation strategies Finally, India’s coexistence strategy must move beyond episodic crisis response toward integrated landscape governance aligning conservation, agriculture, rural livelihoods, and infrastructure within a single policy framework. The study: Reframing human–elephant conflict in India through context-dependent coexistence strategies

This is so gross 🤮 We literally have wildlife out fighting for its home. This poor elephant.

The operator of the machne is a good candidate for some backroad justice.

I share your anger, but violence to one individual won’t solve it—there are plenty more who’ll replace him. I’ve posted research-based proposed solutions from a very recent, comprehensive study in this thread.

@parrythehoot Then KlLL 50…

@parrythehoot Says the self-declared Christian.

I despair of the human race, I really do. We are destroying their natural habitat for greed.

The Mara Elephant Project, and The Sheldrick Foundation, too, use drones to prevent elephant/human conflict. Elephants approaching farms are safely herded back to wildlife reserves.

Sorry but people who profit from this need to go extinct before animals we cherish. It’s the most obvious solution to all the unnecessary harm they’re inflicting.

Assholes destroying Nature will win. Only when they have killed it all will they realize what they destroyed. A pox on them.

heartbreaking to see 😢 and shocking to watch these poor animals want their homes There are no words for the misery and eco crimes humans cause 😡

I can't watch this. I know it is happening but I have to look away. My support for wildlife conservation is strong and I back it with financial support and spreading the facts. I feel like that is the best way I can fight for the animals.

No wonder we are greatly concerned about the planet's future. The theory of aliens coming to rescue the planet seems to be true, since humans are leaving no stones unturned in destroying the earth. Humans must understand that the coexistence of all the earthlings is necessary.

@opinionated_bat How sad 😔 tragic video . Elephants are brave majestic animals who support each other . This Elephant is a very brave warrior for nature . Bless him ❤️😢

So sad! I hate humans!

A powerful reminder for me that conservation matters so much. Asian elephants deserve real protection and a safe future.

@serial__comma As painful as it is - humans will succeed at the end in ending all wildlife & scrape every inch of forests for building their cities. Yet when all wildlife is gone & birds will chirp no more, humanity will die slowly, realizing, it’s an animal like the rest of them.

Everyone thinks animals are stupid. I think people are stupid and greedy. These elephants are smarter than the morons destroying his habitat.

People are really shit sometimes.

Every minute of every day I hate and despise what humans are in their destructive quest this is monstrous

Too many people Not enough elephants Yet USAID wants population explosions.

Not a good look for the contractor, loss of contract imminent:

This is horrifying. We are so incredibly cruel. This poor, poor, elephant.

😭😡😡😡

Keep these interlopers out and let the elephants have their space!

Humans don't deserve this planet or the many blessings of it.

Imagine being the guy driving that machine. I wouldn't do it.

What a creep the bulldozer operator must be to attack this elephant . Which country ?

It breaks my heart to see this, their home is being destroyed and he/she wants to protect doing this is wrong 🤬

Ecocide, will likely be the Hallmark condemnation of our times by future generations?

Love elephants!! 🐘 Sadly, their numbers are also decreasing due to human animal conflict. Forrest coverage is decreasing and elephants are forced to move to areas closer to human habitation. There should be a worldwide ban on the killing of elephants.

@vfaes_org does wonderful work providing train warning systems to prevent ele railway deaths and to restore ele habitats. @Sangita4eles

So sad to see this beautiful, brave being literally fighting for the survival of his family unit in their natural habitat.

It's all so self-defeating:-

Times and scenes like this make me hate the human race.

God I hate humans.

@Lizmont007 Well we know what the outcome will be. Humans always get what they want.

@g_knapp Stop killing the elephants and destroying their homes!
