BREAKING: The Azerbaijan NSS has announced that they are charging Ruben Vardanyan on charges of "financial terrorism, participation in the formation of armed groups, and residing in the Republic of Azerbaijan without proper authorization." Reminder that former Artsakh State Minister, Ruben Vardanyan, was abducted yesterday by Azerbaijan's border service from the illegal Azerbaijani checkpoint on the Berdzor corridor during the forced displacement of Armenians from Artsakh. The government of Azerbaijan has compiled a blacklist of former and current officials from Artsakh and is demanding their unlawful detention.

Former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev also led Azerbaijan for 14 years during the Soviet era. What he said once again proves that: 1) Russian leaders have always helped Nagorno-Karabakh remain under Azerbaijani rule. 2) The Azerbaijani authorities have always created fabricated problems for the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh. Also Talysh population in Azerbaijan had similar tragedy and Moscow always helped to Azerbaijan. But Armenians were lucky, because they have their government and strong lobby in Europe, Russia and USA.

The regime threatens to invade Armenia if they don't cede several towns and villages inside Armenia's territorial boundaries. Today, Azerbaijani bulldozers are destroying what remains of Armenian heritage in Artsakh. If left without international support, the Armenian Genocide of 1915 will be finalized in the coming weeks and months. We must act now to hold Azerbaijan accountable by calling for the release of the hostages and enforcing sanctions until a safe and viable path for the return of the indigenous Armenians to Artsakh is achieved. Though today we commemorate the 109th anniversary of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide, the plight of the Armenians is not over – and we must recommit ourselves to end the ethnic cleansing and defend Armenians’ right to self-determination.

I’m here in #Armenia, on the border with #Azerbaijan — with the Lachin Corridor behind me. This was the site or the ethnic cleansing of 120,000 Armenian Christians. This corridor once connected Armenia proper to Nagorno-Karabakh, or #Artsakh — a part of ancient Armenia, the first nation to adopt Christianity in 301 AD. For nine months, Azerbaijan blockaded this road, cutting off all food and supplies causing a severe humanitarian disaster. Then in September 2023, backed by #Turkey, Azerbaijan launched a military assault — forcing 120,000 Armenian Christian to flee their ancestral homeland. This was ethnic cleansing. Yesterday, I sat with a young to woman whose sister was horrifically tortured and killed — with the video shared online by Azeri soldiers. I heard a similar story about a young man. Despite a verbal peace agreement, Azerbaijan keeps adding new conditions. And every night, they fire across the border at Armenian homes — even near international observers. The U.S. and international community must act — to stand with Armenia and make clear that it should not be forced to give up one more inch of land. We also need to help residents of Artsakh rebuild their lives and demand Azerbaijan release all the Artsakh prisoners. And we must ensure that Armenian Christians are never again subjected to persecution or victims of genocide or ethnic cleansing.
