Peter Jackson left Tom Bombadil out of The Fellowship of the Ring, but the films still referenced the moment he saves the two hobbits. In an extended scene, Merry and Pippin are trapped in a tree’s roots in Fangorn. Treebeard frees them with: “Eat earth. Dig deep. Drink water. Go to sleep.” Those words are taken almost directly from Tom Bombadil’s command to Old Man Willow in The Fellowship of the Ring, a small book reference hidden in the Extended Edition.
