According to the driver of another bus, the robbers stopped them and demanded their phones, which they handed over. However, the driver of the bullet-riddled bus was unaware of what was happening and, upon arriving at the scene, reversed after encountering the robbery. Mike Nichols laughed, while Hoffman turned toward the wall and banged his head trying to hide his laughter. Nichols kept the spontaneous moment in the film. Hoffman later recalled: “Before we shot the hotel scene in ‘The Graduate,’ Mike Nichols asked me about the first time I touched a woman’s breast.” After describing an awkward experience, Nichols simply told him: “Do that.” Hoffman did, and Bancroft never broke character.
