The First “Killer Robot” ever seen. Mechanical Man (1921) is an Italian science fiction film from the silent era. It is an interesting and rare film. It prominently features a robot as it's primary antagonist, or at least as a part of the primary antagonist. The robot is controlled... remotely by a nefarious operator. At the end of the film she is defeated when she is separated from the remote control. While this movie may have the first killer robot on film. The debate on the first movie robot is a difficult one to put to rest. If the definition of a robot is stretched much earlier movies feature some kind of artificially intelligent machine. There are also a few lost serials and films which featured some kind of robotic creature from the 1910s, I have found a source I am investigating for these films.show more

The robot is used to inspect the walls of ships. 🚢 The Magnet Crawler introduced by the University of Bremen is a lightweight and compact climbing robot for magnetic surfaces. The robot has two magnetic wheels driven by geared motors and an elastic tail to improve stability. In the front part of the robot, there is a miniature wireless camera. The robot is remotely teleoperated & the video signal from the camera is displayed to the operator on a portable screen. Let's wait and perhaps the robot will become more autonomous over time. Big fan of robots that make the world a safer place for humans.

Honor is building the first phone that also includes an AI robot. It's a robot in the sense that the pop-up camera acts as the AI's eyes, and if I understand correctly, it allows a continuously active AI companion to work as an assistant. Interesting, but probably more of a gimmick. However, personal AI companions are coming.

🚨 A SAN FRANCISCO ENGINEER HIRED A ROBOT TO CLEAN HER HOUSE — AND STARTED AN INTERNET WAR A software engineer in San Francisco hired a robot to clean her home and the comments split in half instantly. One side made fun of the robot for being terrible at the job. The other side attacked her for taking work from a real person and handing it to a machine. Then she clapped back. The robot is not autonomous. A human is on the other end remotely operating it and getting paid. That person just doesn’t have to sit in traffic, park, haul supplies, or walk into a stranger’s house. They clean from home. She said she still uses a regular human cleaner too. This was an experiment. And she doesn’t get why people acted like she deleted an entire job when a person is still doing the work. Would you let a remotely operated robot clean your house… or is this the first step toward replacing every service worker in America?

Robot Dreams is finally out and I can share some excerpts from my animatic work for the film! Thanks to José Luis Ágreda and Pablo for the lovely experience, the three of us working together on the entire storyboard for a year and a half. (Also: go see the movie!!!)

Just a little taste of the Robohacks hackathon happening now at Y Combinator in San Francisco. This is only two of the teams. The first is a team building a robot for an AirBnb on Mars. The second built a system that 3D prints new tools for the robot to do new work on Mars. Both demonstrate why I love builders so much. Dreaming of a new world and learning together how to build for a new robot none of them have used before.

I think I found the most insane thing I’ve ever seen in my life on tiktok This guy named Citra is building a 10 foot tall animatronic robot named Nosey and it’s going viral Probably one of the creepiest things I’ve seen on the internet, this guy is making it his life's work to make a killer robot similar to the ones in FNAF

Jason Ma reveals the first true scaling law in robotics: robots trained on 1 million hours of first-person human video predictably get better without ever seeing robot data "Yesterday we announced our new flagship robot foundation model called Dyna-2. It's very significant for the entire field for many different reasons. First of all, it's the first robot foundation model trained on at least one million hours of data. That in itself is a very challenging infrastructure challenge." "What we demonstrated is that even if the one million hours of data is entirely first-person video of humans doing manipulation tasks, we actually see scaling law for transferring to robot embodiments that the model has never seen before." "By training on more human data, we actually see predictable performance improvement on robots. That's a big deal because the biggest challenge facing robot foundation models is that we don't have enough data." "Unlike language models, there are just not enough robotics data out there, and it's very difficult to collect these robot data. Only by passively observing humans doing things can we scale this kind of data, and this is the first time we showed there is a lot of improvement that can transfer." Jason Ma Dyna Robotics

One of my favorite works in the "robot learning from human videos" space that I have seen lately. This is because it offers a really coherent and unique way to represent robot skills without a lot of the downsides we see from estimation-based approaches.

HopTo’s Hop-1 is a hybrid hopping-and-flying robot built for rough terrain. It looks weird at first, but the logic is actually pretty smart. Flying all the time burns a ton of energy just fighting gravity, so they let the robot spend most of its time bouncing on a passive spring instead. The rotors mainly steer, put back the energy lost on each hop, and only fully take over when the robot actually needs to fly. HopTo says hopping uses around 25% of the energy of continuous flight. So the whole idea is pretty simple: stay on the ground as much as possible, and only fly when you have to.

THE WILD ROBOT (2024) is the kind of movie that makes you forget you’re watching animation. That migration sequence alone is breathtaking, then the film somehow finds a way to make it even more emotional. DreamWorks absolutely cooked with this one.

Edgar Wright on his favourite shot in 'Black Narcissus' (1947): "I think 'Black Narcissus' (1947) is one of the greatest colour movies of all time. There is one particular shot towards the end of the film with Kathleen Byron, which, in my head, that is probably minutes of film, when in reality the shot is only on screen for less than two seconds And it's a shot of Kathleen Byron coming through a doorway, and it's part of an incredible climax, which I won't spoil if you've never seen the film. But it's one of those shots in Cinema that is ingrained on my brain. Like a lot of Powell and Pressburger films, I think it's just [has] a picturesque quality to it which is just somehow difficult to pinpoint exactly what the magic of Powell and Pressburger together is. But I think the thing is sometime these are the films that you keep returning to, is you can't kind of define exactly what it is about the film that keeps you obsessed, you just keep coming back. And this is one of those movies." ('Edgar Wright’s Closet Picks', Criterion, 2025)
