NVIDIA once built phone chips, grew it into a real business, and then got locked out of that market. Jensen Huang calls it a genuine strategic mistake, and also the reason NVIDIA is in robotics today. This is him at Stanford's CS153, on the bet he says he should have turned down. Important mobile companies came to NVIDIA to build phone chips, and he now thinks the answer was obvious: "The answer when they approached us, the answer should have been, nah, not interested." They took the bet anyway. It grew, and then the 3G-to-4G transition handed the phone's most important part, the modem, to Qualcomm, and NVIDIA was shut out. His point is what he did with the wreckage: "We got shut out... and then went back to zero. But the recovery was I took all of that expertise, that extreme low power and energy efficiency expertise, and I shifted all to an application that didn't exist at the time called robotics." The low-power chip lineage he salvaged became Thor, the brain now going into NVIDIA's robots and cars. He is blunt that going into mobile was a waste of time and a strategic mistake. Jensen Huang founded Nvidia on the wrong graphics technology, and when no one knew the right way, he bought three textbooks from Fry's for a couple hundred dollars to rebuild the algorithm. Nvidia is worth more than $4 trillion today. This is him at Y Combinator on the day he realized Nvidia was building the wrong thing: Nvidia had chosen the wrong graphics approach, finished dead last, and run out of money. Then came the worse discovery. "Not only did we choose the wrong technology, we didn't know how to do it the right way." He said it to the whole company out loud, because the alternative was pretending it wasn't true. "We won't have a company if we don't confront the fact that this doesn't work and start working towards the right algorithm." There was no research budget and no expert to call, so he went and found the answer himself. "I had a couple hundred dollars in my pocket. And so I went down to Fry's and I bought three textbooks. And the textbooks were about OpenGL and how to design OpenGL pipelines. I brought it back to the company and gave it to the engineers." The engineers rebuilt the whole thing from those pages, and it became the foundation for everything Nvidia made after. So that chip program was in bad shape. It wasn't on the path to success and we also had the DOJO program which was also doing okay but not on a path to be competitive with NVIDIA. So I collapsed the two programs into just one program to get everyone focused on the AI5 chip. It's performance per watt is extremely good. It is probably going to be at least 2-3 times better than NVIDIA performance per watt and 10% cost of the NVIDIA chip something like that."

Companies are going way too far to try and sell you products Just to buy 2 new windows, a company came out and said you have to - Do a 3 window minimum even through you only need 2 - Sit through a 90 minute presentation on the history of the company, the founder, their story - A presentation on windows, how windows work and why their windows are different - A pitch on the state of the economy and inflation - A horrible negotiation experience on the cost of the actual windows This is actually happening at a lot of places. A similar experience of mine was I literally went to get an oil change at Mountain View tires and they wanted me to come out to the car and go over a full vehicle diagnostic that they would first need to take over an hour doing. They said it was policy It’s all to upsell you. Even places like valvoline make you do a full vehicle inspection now so they can go over it with you and upsell you on repairs

Once upon a time there were screensavers... and then there was THIS! Jim Sachs released the first version of his realistic 3D Marine Aquarium screensaver for Windows PCs in July 2000. This was a massive upgrade over Microsoft's basic 2D bitmap aquarium screensaver from Windows 95/98. Sachs hand-created the 3D models and fish animations, which helped it quickly gain popularity and led to Microsoft licensing versions for Windows XP.
