Yes, they were American nationalists which at the time was interchangeable with white, at the time our first naturalization act was written in 1790 black people were not considered fully human and Indians did not become citizens until 1924 and even then they did not have voting rights in all states until 1948. We are the native Americans, as America was built by our ancestors, prior to that there was no American identity.
