Having a menagerie is fun as a kid! I had, at various times, a monkey, a warthog, hedgehogs, an iguana, a chameleon, rabbits, pigeons, dogs, cats, chickens, a tortoise..my mom hated it but I loved it!

If you get past the moment when it's possible to sex chicks by looking at their bottoms, there's another method. Pick one up by the scruff of the neck and let it dangle. If it's female it will keep running in place trying to get traction. If it's a male, it will do that do that for a short time and stop, with its legs just hanging.
