It’s impressive to see Ukrainians spring cleaning so close to the front line.

The biggest reason Putin want's Ukraine in one clip. These people at work close to front lines to improve & maintain their cities & towns. Compare that to the lurid pictures from Russia of dilapidated scenes lacking greatly in basic maintenance. The totalitarian governments have so defeated the Russian peoples that they don't bother. The Ukrainian people are not defeated. Thus Putin needs Ukrainian energy to help him rebuild the Russian Empire, and fight his expansionist wars. The iron of course is, he will simply destroy the very thing he wants, just look at occupied LNR/DNR. We can see this reflected in human history. When people have hope for the future, they build and maintain things to last. The collapse of the Roman Empire demonstrates this. During the fall, public works declined. By the time of Constantine, the emperor was using spolia to build public works, a good example is the Arch of Constantine. Outside of military fortifications (castles) and churches (doubled as fortifications) civil architecture degenerated to replaceable wood structures during 'dark ages'. The European recovery is noted to have started in 11th century with permanent structures using materials salvaged from Rome's ruins before the advent of Gothic Architecture. European peoples recovered hope first.
