Amazing what we were capable of engineering hundreds of years ago. They took on projects that seem almost unimaginable today, even with all of our modern technology and machinery. They were just built different back then I guess.

No surprise, considering New York is New Amsterdam. Amsterdam (NL) was built the same way, with wooden planks underneath, 13659 of them.

You should do a doc on how early enslaved and freedmen Africans practically built most parts of NY.

Surprised this isn’t sinking overtime? By the weight of the buildings. Crazy.

As a driller, I can confirm its more than just “loose garbage” theres whole buildings 30ft underneath most of NYC as a whole, lower manhattan included (duh). Theres so much metal, glass, brick, plastic anything you could think of probably. Its just a big landfill with a sand cap.

I was wondering why I never wanted to go to New York. It’s a garbage city.

Does anyone here remember the old Beauty & the Beast series from the late 80s? There was an episode where they found an old ship with treasure in it and they wondered how it got way down there. Y'all remember that?

So this must be why New York rats are the king of rats cause the soil new York was formed upon was made for them 😭

Trash and even wood from 1680 is so old it has very likely deteriorated into humus by now, unless it was scrap metal, glass or fossilized animal bones. Fortunately they didn't have plastic back then. UNfortunately that hasn't stopped New York dumping plastic centuries later...

the fact that its literally all landfill and we just... kept building on it. i grew up on the waterfront and you learn real quick which blocks smell like the godforsaken fill under them on a hot day. every construction site is just a former dump digging itself back up.

Almost like the garbage in charge of NYC.

English water companies might be on to something...only that instead of using garbage as infill they're using raw sewer for land reclamation

Battery Park, it's called Battery Park. Was not originally a part of Manhattan.
