Zionism stands for a very simple proposition. It doesn't stand for the proposition that Jews are better than everybody else or that Jews are worse than everybody else. It stands for the very common sense proposition that Jews are the same as everybody else, that we have the same rights as other peoples do to live in our ancestral homeland. And so it's very bizarre when people say they're anti-Zionists and claim at the same time not to be anti-Semites. What you’re saying, if you’re an anti-Zionist, is that Bulgarians have the right to live in Bulgaria, Japanese people have the right to live in Japan, Irish people have the right to live in Ireland, and maybe even Palestinians have the right to live in what they call Palestine—but Jews don’t. Jews alone are denied the same rights as everyone else. Well, that's just anti-Semitism, plain and simple, the oldest kind of hatred there is.

You may have seen recently an interview by Tucker Carlson of Mike Huckabee, the ambassador to Israel, where Carlson suggested that all Jews who want to live in Israel should have to take a DNA test in order to be able to live in their ancestral homeland. Even on its own terms, his argument fails, because those tests have actually been conducted on every major Jewish population in the world, and they've compared the Syrian Jews to the Iraqi and Iranian Jews and the Italian and Moroccan Jews and even Ashkenazi Jews from Europe like me. And guess what they have found? Dozens of genetic tests over 30 or 40 years have shown that we Jews are intimately connected with one another genetically, and that all the major Jewish populations of the world descend from one place 2000 years ago, and that place is the Levant, where Israel is today, in the heart of the Middle East.
