The founder of Coinbase on not letting the SEC destroy the crypto industry: “The total amount we spent on legal bills was in the $50,000,000 to a $100,000,000 range. But the damage to the stock was probably ten to twenty billion. There was a massive downward pressure on the stock for a couple years. I should mention we won that case. We didn't pay a single dollar in fines. We didn't have to change a single thing about the company. The SEC withdrew the case and several judges published opinion saying that the SEC behaved in an arbitrary and capricious manner. I have a nice little thing in my office commemorating winning our case and suing the SEC.”

SEC Chair: Will issue crypto market rules if the Clarity Act fails to pass On July 27, 2026, SEC Chairman Paul Atkins Paul Atkins discussed the Clarity Act and the regulation of the U.S. crypto market structure during a CNBC interview. He stated that he is optimistic about Congress passing the bill, with the SEC actively assisting by answering questions and providing technical support. If Congress ultimately fails to act, the SEC is ready, willing, and able to issue rules to address the issues involved in the Clarity Act and improve regulation in other areas of the crypto market. However, Atkins believed that SEC rulemaking cannot replace congressional legislation. The crypto market ultimately still needs a statute to provide more lasting certainty and establish clear safeguards for future regulatory direction and market development.

Gary Gensler taught blockchain at MIT. The crypto community actually cheered when he got appointed SEC chair. Then he spent four years suing every exchange in sight and calling every token a security. Now he is on a CNBC interview claiming the CFTC should not regulate sports betting because it is not their expertise. Expertise. From the guy who knew exactly what crypto was and came for it anyway. We are glad you are NOT in the SEC anymore. We are not sad to see you go.
