Still for whatever reason, I think winning this would have felt more of a win that the sun and moon/journeys wins. This felt the most like a league and it needed to be this one he won 😢 would have been happy if his first league win was this one, the harder league.Then SM/journey

I like to head canon that’s how it was originally planned to go but changed their mind last minute

The irony is the Flare arc could have played out the same way even if Ash won, you would just have to explain away why Ash didn't go on to challenge Diantha after the league.
