It is not enough for the government to simply condemn the establishment of more illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank; the UK must take concrete action. Ban all trade with illegal settlements and refuse to have anything to do with the proceeds of crime.

UK's Andy Burnham: Israel continues to violate the ceasefire agreement, killing innocent Palestinians. We're seeing a surge in settler violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and the continued expansion of illegal settlements displacing Palestinian communities. And Netanyahu's government is clearly attempting to make a two-state solution impossible. That's why we need to do more, which includes looking at further sanctions both on those involved in the violence in Gaza, but also looking at measures to ban trade in goods with illegal settlements. I, like many people, feel passionately about Gaza and I will do everything I can to work with international partners to stop the suffering, to ensure the Israeli government adheres to international law, and to keep the prospect of a two-state solution alive, because this is the only way to lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.

EU’s Kaja Kallas: We are the largest donor and the strongest backer of the two-state solution. And this leads me to the West Bank. All the 27 member states agree that Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. Currently, the EU applies a so-called differentiation policy under which products from the settlements are identified. However, this policy has not done much to limit trade with settlements because implementation is inconsistent. Following a request of the European Council in June, the Commission presented options to further restrict trade with illegal Israeli settlements. These include a full or partial ban on imports of settlement products, stricter export licensing requirements, and the possible use of tariffs. These are not options against Israel. These are options against the illegal settlements that undermine the two-state solution.

When the ICJ has accused the Israeli state of genocide, it’s clear that MPs of all parties should be condemn them. Failing to do so undermines our ability to hold up international law.
