The asylum seeker living in a migrant hotel, whose arrest sparked protests in the Essex town of Epping, was yesterday convicted of sexually assaulting a woman and a teenage girl. Under the law, asylum seekers sentenced to more than 12 months in prison should be deported. But the very fact that they've come to Britain saying they face torture or persecution in their home country means they can appeal. So should all criminal asylum seekers be deported?

A massive fire has broken out at the Grand Burstin hotel in Folkestone that is said to have housed Asylum Seekers. It is part of the Britannia hotel chain that is one of the largest providers of accommodation to 'refugees' providing its owner with tens of millions in profit every year. It is owned by Alex Langsom who himself was classed as a 'jewish refugee' from Europe in the late 1930's.

When 94% of Eritrean and 99% of Sudanese asylum seekers are ultimately granted refugee status, the government should establish safe and legal routes for these countries, or at the very least, fast-track their asylum applications. Student refugee visas and community-support/business-support schemes cannot be the only safe routes for refugees. We should not be offering asylum protection based on qualifications, but on the level of need for sanctuary. A person fleeing war is not more deserving of safety because they can “contribute” more.
