Like most engineers Elon does not understand that he does not understand complexity. He thinks of things like rocket engines as complex (and in a way they are) but the better word is complicated. Complexity is a different animal. The real world runs up against the limits of computability and the engineering paradigm no longer serves you, it actively hinders your understanding. Something as big and messy as a government needs to be big and dirty. It's not a machine, it's a garden. A garden needs dirt and worms and fungus and no small amount of shit in order to be healthy and beautiful. Trying to tightly control a garden doesn't work. Ask the hydroponic bros, they can get plants to grow but they struggle to produce proper crops in a sustainable way. Elon ultimately failed because his definition of "efficiency" was bad, and he was too busy being clever to realize that his methods were doomed to fail at premise level. @elonmusk is absolutely legendary at managing teams of engineers. His brain is fine tuned for that and he is an all time master at it. The downside of that is that it makes him fail when he tries to do things outside of his hyperspecialization. Very common with engineers so we shouldn't be surprised.

I'm grateful for all he has done. And I kinda understand that Tesla took a huge hit and he had to get back for the sake of the company. That being said, I wish he had handed things off to someone rather than just saying it's unfixable. Succession is always tricky and and it seems the bigger you are the more difficult it becomes.
